Drill Sergeant Joe B. Fricks Rules For A Gunfight
My memories of BCT at Ft. Benning | Drill Sgt (E-7) Joe B. Frick

Posted on 11/06/2008 9:11:18 AM PST by MindBender26

Know variations of this have been posted before, but I figure this is important for two reasons:

1. Many criminals may be emboldened for recent election results.

2. We all need a "lighten up" a tad.

DRILL SERGEANT JOE B. FRICK'S RULES FOR A GUN, KNIFE, BASEBALL BAT OR FIST FIGHT

1. Forget about knives, bats and fists. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns. Bring four times the ammunition you think you could ever need.

2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammunition is cheap - life is expensive. If you shoot inside, buckshot is your friend. A new wall is cheap - funerals are expensive

3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss.

4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.

5. Move away from your attacker and go to cover. Distance is your friend. (Bulletproof cover and diagonal or lateral movement are preferred.)

6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a semi or full-automatic long gun and a friend with a long gun.

7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running. Yell "Fire!" Why "Fire"? Cops will come with the Fire Department, sirens often scare off the bad guys, or at least cause then to lose concentration and will.... and who is going to summon help if you yell "Intruder," "Glock" or "Winchester?"

9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty.

11. Always cheat, always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.

12. Have a plan.

13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work. "No battle plan ever survives 10 seconds past first contact with an enemy."

14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible, but remember, sheetrock walls and the like stop nothing but your pulse when bullets tear through them.

15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.

16. Don't drop your guard.

17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees. Practice reloading one-handed and off-hand shooting. That's how you live if hit in your "good" side.

18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. Smiles, frowns and other facial expressions don't (In God we trust. Everyone else keep your hands where I can see them.)

19. Decide NOW to always be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH.

20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get.

21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet if necessary, because they may want to kill you.

22. Be courteous to everyone, overly friendly to no one.

23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation.

24. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with anything smaller than "4".

25. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. "All skill is in vain when an Angel blows the powder from the flintlock of your musket." At a practice session, throw you gun into the mud, then make sure it still works. You can clean it later.

26. Practice shooting in the dark, with someone shouting at you, when out of breath, etc.

27. Redardless of whether justified of not, you will feel sad about killing another human being. It is better to be sad than to be room temperatire.

28. The only thing you EVER say afterwards is, "He said he was going to kill me. I beleived him. I'm sorry, Officer, but I'm very upset now. I can't say anything more. Please speak with my attorney."

Finally, Drill Sergeant Frick's Rules For Un-armed Combat.

1: Never be unarmed.

2: If you have your hands, your feet, your mind and your Spirit as an American Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine or Coastie, you are never unarmed.

Go to the range and then watch "Truimph of the Will" at least four times year. Take everyone in your family to the range with you.

Yelling fire is a good idea, as sadly some people when they here help, Police! Tend to disappear as they don't want to get involved. However when you yell fire they usually act more responsibly. Sad but what can you do.

"6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a semi or full-automatic long gun and a friend with a long gun."

6.a You may find yourself in a situation where you are armed only with a handgun.

6.b Handguns are very useful if you become involved in a fight on the way to get your long arm.

That Drill Sergeant doesn’t seem to know anything about sitting back and calling in Artillery to do the job. Air strikes also provide good service to a target. Best yet, nuke em from across the ocean.

in a real gunfight, I always thought a radio and laser trumped a gun. but that's just me, and I could be wrong.

The Drill Sergeant is discussing personal defense. Now, I happen to agree with you that indirect fire is a game winner but I'm having a hard time getting the wife to let me put 105s in the back yard.

Any advice is appreciated.

yep, I always liked a radio instead of a gun... I don’t mind using a gun, but sitting around and feeling that whump! in your chest as the enemy becomes carbon..... just a nice popcorn and beer time.

Any advice is appreciated.

Paint it white and hang baskets off it filled with flowers. Preferably something that blooms through out the season.

Women love hanging baskets.

A few tactical pointers.

1) Go around corners wide, not narrow like they do on TV. Wide lets you see them before they see you, no matter where they are around the corner. Use a ruler, pencil, and piece of paper to prove this to yourself.

2) Firing a gun sideways has saved more lives than emergency rooms. It looks neat in the movies, but you do not hit your target.

3) Inside, it is far better to be prone, shooting up, than be standing up and having to lower your gun to shoot down.

4) Do not go to them, let them come to you. The advantage is to the defense.

5) Have a knife in your other hand. You can often close a wide gap and kill with a knife, before you can be shot by a novice. Knife wounds are often deadlier than gunshot wounds.

6) Just because they are shot, doesn’t mean you’ve won. Lots of crime scenes end up with two people who have shot each other. There is only a very narrow line in the human body where you will have a “one shot drop kill” most of the time. People can live an hour or more even with serious organ damage.

7) The very drunk sometimes think that gunshot wounds are from somebody punching them, and they get angry.

8) Don’t worry about karma. Worry about lawyers.

My Glock 23C works well with both 165 gr and 180 gr ammo. Take various weights to the range and compare results with your own firearm. Make sure the hollow points feed smoothly in your firearm. My wife's Colt Commander Officer's model has a stubby feed ramp the won't free hollow points. Ball ammo works every time. Be sure your firearm feeds!

I'm confident that your box of hollow points wasn't cheap. You still need to make sure they feed. Expensive ammo that doesn't feed is worse than cheaper ammo that does feed.

Compared to my life, they're cheaper than dirt.
