If it was his maternal grandmother, and the age is right for that, I thought she had a broken hip, I don't remember any mention of cancer.

There was mention that she had cancer, and people who follow him knew it. Even some who didn't follow him. I knew it. The story "Cancer Returns for Obama's Grandmother" ran on KITV (Honolulu's ABC affiliate) on October 23rd. Read it
