Richmond Times-Dispatch poll shows tight race for president in Va. O-47 M-44

The presidential contest in Virginia is heading toward a photo finish.

The final Richmond Times-Dispatch Poll of the campaign shows Sen. Barack Obama at 47 percent and Sen. John McCain at 44 percent. Nine percent are undecided — an unusually large slice of the electorate. The profile of undecided voters suggests that some are potentially opposed to Obama.

Because Obama’s advantage over McCain is within the poll’s margin of error — plus or minus 4 percentage points — the contest in Virginia can be considered about even.

Good point. I think the polls this year do not represent the electorate for two main reasons.

First, the crossover vote is probably extremely under-represented. Since it’s not politically correct to vote against the “black” guy, Democrats who aren’t voting for him are almost certainly going to refuse to respond (or lie). Imagine if you were a registered Democrat and were one of the many crossovers. Would you admit you weren’t voting for him? You’re more likely to be called a racist than a Republican because as a Democrat you should agree with his policies more.

Second, the “refuse to respond” numbers are probably very high this year. Both Republicans and crossover Democrats are probably quite likely to refuse polls whereas proud Obama supporters will enthusiastically say they support their candidate.

"And yet the MSM has all but put VA in Obama’s column.

Yup....the Stockhom Syndromed GOP "strategist" on CNN this morning has bought the koolaid, pretty much guaranteeing VA and PA for Obama this morining.

John King this AM on CNN, said Virginia is gone Obama by double digits.

I am just about to email Fox and CNN with the poll.

Stop posting polls

Polls are BS, especially this year. Stop posting them, particularly if you have a new sign up date, which you do.

I have been handing out sample Rep ballots at an early voting location in McLean, VA. I noticed that when I offered sample Rep ballots to people, some were reluctant to take it if there were minorities in line. Yet, once someone screwed up enough courage to ask for one, a bunch of others joined in. The Obama campaign has pulled the race card on white voters, i.e., if you don't vote for Obama, you are a racist. Many people are not disclosing their prefrerences publicly and most of them are Reps.

A number came up to me later after they voted saying that they took the Obama sample ballot to see who not to vote for. Others just gave me a wink or a thumbs up gesture. We had Colin Powell, Sam Donaldson, former AG Gonzalez, and other luminaries voting at this location. I can say that the overwhelming majority of seniors are voting for McCain and they are out in force. Koreans, Vietnamese, and Filipinos were also overwhelmingly McCain and they were actually less bashful about expressing it. There are about 150,000 Koreans and Vietnamese in NoVA.

McCain won't win NoVA, but if keeps the margin low, he will win the state.

It may be getting tighter, but McCain needs to stop being in second place.

He isn't in second place, the polls have him in second place and there is a big difference.

On Nov.4th he will be in 1st place.

Now, where are the big leads that Obama is suppose to have?

Where did they go to?

McCain will take Va by 5-7pts.

Agree. ---- But only if Virginians continue to vote....even after the MSM calls Virginia based on the Northern VA fringe vote.

Please my Virginia friends.....VOTE until the polls close!!

Seriously, I am so sick of seeing McCain down in the polls.

It won't matter after the 4th, the polls will have been shown to be wrong.

Ofcourse, now they are saying it is a virtual tie!

By Monday, they will have McCain slightly ahead.

They will.

They know how important this election is to the future of the United States.

Two red flags in the internals of this poll:

1) It’s REGISTERED voters, not likely or very likely voters

and

2) McCain and Obama are tied with male voters.
