AUGUSTA, Maine - Gov. John Baldacci is urging Mainers to vote against repealing the new taxes on beer, wine and soda, saying the revenues are needed if Maine is to ever provide universal health coverage.
Those new taxes as well as taxes on paid insurance claims were enacted last spring as a way to fund the state-subsidized Dirigo health insurance program. Maine voters will decide whether to repeal the taxes under a people's veto question on Tuesday's ballot.
In his weekend radio address, Baldacci acknowledges that people are fed up with taxes. But he says there are hardworking Mainers who are also fed up with not having quality health care coverage.
The Democratic governor also says the law containing the beverage tax will also decrease the existing tax on health claims.
Republicans have been highly critical of the expanded taxes and contend they would prop up a failed state program.

ME voters should send Balducci a message and tell him to shove his tax increases where the sun don't shine!

This is what Obama means by spreading the wealth around. Do you really want to pay higher taxes for the government health care program that doesn't work? Tell Balducci you want ME's state government to start tightening its belt and cutting spending!

What does Senator Susan Collins think about this? Perhaps she should give her opinion to the voting populous for Maine.

That should go over well with the NASCAR/MALE/BLUE COLLAR crowd?

Gov. John Baldacci ... if Maine is to ever provide universal health coverage. Did you consider that your citizens may not want "universal health coverage," that they may believe that one should fend for themselves and their families?
Universal health care is not going to make it cheaper or better - it will destroy quality and ration availability - any sensible person understands this.

Oh, forgot to mention, if run by government, will be 10x as costly - see the track record!

I spent about a year in Maine, nice state and a beautiful state...but that was in the 60's.
It's time for another "Boston Tea Party", except maybe make it the "Maine Beverage Party".
You guys just get a van, and once a month put all of your "beverage" money together and go to Boston or somewhere south and buy your stuff.
This is another example of "unintended consequences", which is the plight of liberals. Like the anti-smoking thing... they hammered on it being politically incorrect to smoke, and then banned it everywhere, then couldn't understand what happened to the tobacco tax revenues.
So they took your smokes, and they're taxing your Cokes...just to make up for it, you understand.
I cannot - for the life of me - see where liberals get off calling conservatives "greedy"...they are the greediest of all.

What does Senator Susan Collins think about this? ROFL. Both Maine Senators are the GOP twins of Boxer and Feinstein.

ME voters should send Balducci a message and tell him to shove his tax increases where the sun don't shine! Unfortunately that's a pretty good description of Maine, most of the time.

Darn. I thought she could use this to ensure a win. Oh well lost opportunity for another Republican...Ugh.

I am convinced Maine will vote for McCain. The people up there have been taxed through the roof. Property taxes in that state are insane - they just can not afford to pay anymore.
I'm certain the average Mainer realizes if the nations taxes go through the roof with Obama at the nations helm the number of people who can afford a vacation will plummet. Take away the tourist industry in that state and it will collapse.

What’s wrong with these Governors?
My RINO gov. Charlie Crist is a fiscal miser. Only thing I can say good about him. At least he doesn’t raise taxes on my beer and wine.
You folks in Mass. need to dump this clown.

LOL! Maine = Berkley. This State is so left leaning that I feel sea sick. I am CONVINCED that most Mainers would sacrifice their young in order to elect bho. A real frigged up place to live.

provide universal health coverage So the people already paying for their own health-care coverage can pay for the people who don't?!!! What makes anyone think that is a good idea?! Don't we (TAXPAYERS) provide enough 'hand up/hand out' now?! If they haven't figured out how to survive without someone else footing their bills they never will!
