McCain officials told Politico that the new offensive is likely to focus on Rezko and Ayers. The officials said the campaign will not bring up the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obamas former pastor, because McCain has forbade them from using that as a weapon. Without being specific, the officials said outside groups may focus on Wright. Either this "leak" is profound stupidity, or they have something else in mind. A campaign doesn't leak an attack. They keep it quiet until they actually attack.

Steve Schmidt, who was Karl Rove’s understudy, is running McCain’s campaign.

I tend to think so too. They made a big stink of this and led with Ayers today. I think they knew Obama would be prepared for these issues in October. It is obvious they are going to come out. It will be interesting to see if McCain is going to zag when they expect a zig.

That is exactly what I was thinking when I read this. Maybe it's like the Palin announcement. McCain let everyone think he was going to choose Romney - and the Obamanite planned for it by preparing ads to run immediately after the announcement. Only thing is, he picked Sarah Palin instead.

I don’t think that it matters one way or another that they know it’s coming. They will have to defend against it. McCain has already been bloodied about as much as is possible about the economy. This was a manufactured crisis and people are not suffering to any great degree, oh, I forgot all those people who are losing their house, which they shouldn’t have had in the first place. So go rent something, like what you should have done in the first place. These people wouldn’t have been voting for McCain anyway. And if your’e not suffering, why would you think you need to pay higher taxes? To show you’re patriotism?

I think what they had in mind was exactly this response by the Obama campaign. The McCain campaign threw a light jab and Obama shifted his whole stance. In poker, that is the equivalent of showing your cards. In boxing, its the fastest way to open yourself to a solid hook to the jaw.

You are exactly right! Remember these are the people who were able to keep the Palin pick locked up tight until the very moment they wanted it released. These guys are disciplined and this leak was purposeful.
