I understand that Newman was a movie icon, so such adoration is to be expected. I just wanted to post a reminder that, as compelling as Newman’s characters might have been, they were fictional. The death of Officer Faulkner and the impact on his loved ones is real. It has tortured his survivors to this day, enabled by useful idiots such as Newman. Anyone familiar with the case will remember Daniel Faulkner this day, a real hero to Newman’s celluloid facsimiles.

Sure, it's to be expected. Same happened with Norman Mailer.
And I couldn't believe the outpouring when Heath Ledger of Brokeback died.
I expect it. I still think it's ridiculous.
Newman played anti-heroes, not heroes. He contribued greatly to the deterioration of good values nationally.
I, for one, am no fan of Newman.
I did not post this to speak ill of the dead. My main purpose was to remember a good man whose memory was slandered by Newman. That being said, I have no qualms speaking ill of the dead. Yes, Newman did charity work. You can decide whether it’s absolution for the injustice he did to the Faulkners or, in the case of his fervent position on Viet Nam, one million dead Cambodians. There will be no discussion of Newman’s sins in the MSM or thought of in it the general public consciousness, even though the “evidence is out there”. Merely accolades for his acting ability. That’s why I am part of the Free Republic. It reminds us what is truly important.
Newman, Mailer...Hollywood and it’s fellow travelers. Whether they were useful idiots or traitors, their cause was not that of America’s. it’s a shame that this fact is so rarely discussed.
On the RIP/Newman thread, some FReepers want to canonize Newman as some great American hero. Far from it. He made a few good films, but most were were dreary stories of human failures and bleak outcomes. Newman was way overrated as an actor. Hollywood loved him and rewarded him with 10 acting nominations. BFD.
Fact is, Newman was a proud liberal Democrat and a political activist who supported every issue and cause tied to the leftwing agenda. Newman also hated Pres Bush and didn’t think much of President Reagan either.
Sometimes conservatives need to be reminded that individuals like Paul Newman and his pal, Robert Redford, have helped to undermine our Republic and demand we embrace socialism.
When you evaluate someone you have to look at their full body of work. He did a lot more good than bad during his time on earth and his camps and quarter billion of charity fundraising contributed far more than a few misguided or idiotic stances. We need more stars and athletes like him rather than the Robert Downey, JR and Allen Iverson types we have so many of.

Call me extreme, but the only discussion I am interested in regarding Newman is his politics. His politics were always of the Blame America First variety. His portrayal of the fictional Cool Hand Luke doesn’t absolve him of his fervent support of the Viet Nam anti-war cause, cop killers and indictments of almost every cause which conservatives strongly believe in.
Thanks for posting something real about PN. I am not saddened by his passing but then again, I never wished for his death, either. His death is nodifferent from millions of others like it that bring grief to those around him . . . ‘nuff said about that.
He was still a leftist and his efforts aided the socialist cause. Every time somebody buys his products, you help purchase the rope that will eventually hang you. Newman and his allies on the left are, at the root of it all, anti-American. He may have been quite humanitarian in many of his impulses, but what is to be celebrated about that - millions and millions of the rest of us are, too. No, Paul Newman may have been a big movies star entitling him to millions of dollars of income, but that is something to be noted to the credit of the American system of enterprise. That he stayed with the same woman for most of his life is pretty much the same thing that the rest of us do. In short, his eulogy should be a paen to America and American ideals. The analysis of his life is another thing altogether - that should start with his involvement with the leftist assault on American freedoms and values through his ‘charitable’ work.
Funny that you left out his work with kids and his $250 million worth of charitable donations in your summary of his life. Seems like a hard thing to leave out.

I have to respectfully disagree. A quarter billion dollars in charity is great. I'm pretty sure that it didn't go to defend the First or Second Amendment or the Boy Scouts, but more than likely to global warming alarmists and criminal defense (under the guise of First Amendment rights). George Soros gives much more to “charity” than Newman, every penny meant to weaken America.
Other than Newman's contributions to his “charities”, what other “contribution” did this pampered prince make, other than support anti-Americanism? Frankly, if I discount his charitable work (most of which I do, if only based upon his support of the execrable Mumia), I can't see the “more good than bad” that you refer to.
As far as we can tell, Clark is first person to be sent to jail by the federal government since socialist leader Eugene Debs in 1919.
