Reader Ron e-mails that the Obama campaign has issued a decree banning all signs at a rally today at the University of Mary Washington in Virginia.
It is a public campus on public property.
The local newspaper, the Fredericksburg Free Lance Star is up in arms:
NOT ALL COUNTRIES guarantee their citizens the right to virtually unbridled freedom of speech. The United States does. Would someone please tell the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama? And the dozing guardians of liberty at the University of Mary Washington?
Mr. Obama, the Democratic nominee for president, is scheduled to speak at a rally at the university today. The public is invited to this forum, on property it, the public, owns. However, signs and banners will not be allowed, according to the organizers and compliant campus officials. Suddenly, UMW is a First Amendment-Free, or at least a First Amendment-Crippled, Zone, subject to the self-serving preferences of politicos. Why does an Obama rally–or a McCain rally or a Nader rally–justify taking a little off the top of Americans’ most fundamental rights?
A UMW spokeswoman says that the Obama campaign required the sign-and-banner ban. That campaign tells us that the ban is for “security” reasons. But a spokesman for the U.S. Secret Service, responsible for protecting presidential candidates, says that the service has no objection to signs at rallies, provided that no “part of the sign could be used as a weapon”–e.g., a heavy metal pole or a sharpened stick. Finally, the McCain campaign tells us, “We encourage people to make signs at our events.”
Just more Chicago gangland tactics from Camp Obama.
LOL I used to sing that song at school back in England
on topic
more and more obama is showing his true colours
so this is change we can believe in is it.
censorship and his cult turn a blind eye, the media turn a blind eye
disgusting
I think this story needs follow up. I was looking at the Fredericksburg website today, and there are a lot of photos of the rally. There are plenty of signs-- but they are "change we need" signs and Barack Obama signs. So any argument about signs obstructing view or any other such nonsense doesn't fly. If signs were not allowed, how is it that so many in the audience had them? Pretty obvious that Obama's campaign is in favor of signs as long as they are controlling them....
Exactly. We're just getting a sneak preview of what's to come right now. And the complicit media are covering it up the best they can.
That wouldn't have been possible at the rally in Fairfax ~ besides the local Republican party officials thought they'd only get 2,000 or so ~ enough to fit in a local highschool gymnasium.
We had 23,000 people show up on almost no notice!
We still had only enough "security" to check bags for suicide bombs and firearms for 2,000.
Private signs were the first to go. So were our jackets, purses, bags, lawnchairs, and everything else the security guys would need to check.
We went doggone near NEKKID just to see Sarah Palin and John McCain.
Now that's dedication and WHINE FREE political rallying.
Oh,yes, we were provided with Palin/McCain signs ~ the blue ones ~ at the rally. Barely enough to show color in that huge crowd.
Next Earth destroyed by water, then by fire ~ film at 11.
Thankfully God never gave up on me and I became a Christian 18 months ago. It took me 50 years to come to my senses. I am extremely blessed that Heavenly Father never gave up on me.
I appreciate your kind offer though.
“He seems to have kept his origin of birth a secret.”
Thats the reason why I wonder if he may indeed be the anti Christ. He sure seems to have the qualifications for being it.
mark for self
Bill Clinton held a rally in a highschool right here in my neighborhood several years back. They didn't invite any Virginia politicians from this area, and bused in all the public attendees from Baltimore, over 70 miles away.
There were no local signs allowed.
I think it has to do with Secret Service and whatever is consider the INSIDE.
On the other hand, Obama was allowed to use the same school during summer session ~ when it wasn't all that busy around there.
The school board is not all wrong on this since school was in session at the time, but their motives were, in fact, evil and will be remembered.
