China mothers flock to Hong Kong for safe baby milk

HONG KONG, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Thousands of mothers from China have flocked to Hong Kong to buy milk powder manufactured overseas, as a tainted milk powder scandal spreads, newspapers said on Wednesday.
Pharmacies and supermarkets along the rail line linking Hong Kong to the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen experienced "panic buying of overseas milk powder brands", the South China Morning Post reported.
The paper quoted Lau Oi-kwok, chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Pharmacy, as saying mainland mothers were "restricted to a maximum of three cans at each pharmacy" to ensure supplies wouldn't run out for Hong Kong mothers.
Chinese quality officials have ordered a nationwide probe into all baby milk powders after hundreds of infants developed kidney stones after drinking tainted formula made by the Sanlu group. Two have died.

Hmmm. Weren’t the Chinese insistent that the tainted pet food from a while back wasn’t their fault? Looks like their incompetence is graduating to new heights.

Isn't this the same China that Obama wants us to emulate?? Cant wait for Obama’s friends to take over our industries so that we too can have more of the same, as the well meaning, protectors of the proletariat, unconcerned with such mundane things as profit, or competency, to run our industries with the skill and deficiency of the DMV.

At least in America, it seems few Asians will breastfeed. There is some sort of stigma to it. Same with black women, few will do it. Most of the breastfeeders are white, it seems. It is a shame because it is normally best for mom and baby.

According to new reports, use of melamine is extensive in China. It even goes into cattle feed. Basically, any processed protein food sold could have melamine inside.

There is a perception in Asia that breastfeed is backward, not ‘modern.’ Shedding baggage of ‘backward past’ has become such an obsession that it is done rather indiscriminately. Especially, anything related to public image.

"Looks like their incompetence is graduating to new heights." It's a complete disregard for the well being of their customers, just to make a buck. It's incompetence and more -- it's deliberate.

They are under Chinese control, but they have to go through check point(customs) to go in and out of it.
It is more like a protectorate.

“According to new reports, use of melamine is extensive in China.”
It’s certainly beginning to appear that way. It seems as though adulterating products to gain an edge is an accepted business practice.
