Palin's Importance
IBD Editorials ^ | September 2, 2008

Security: The impact of prolonged high oil prices is moving well beyond economics. Russia now takes license to assault Georgia, and intends worse. John McCain's Alaska running mate has the only weapon.

When Alaska governor Sarah Palin was chosen for the McCain vice presidential ticket, most attention was on her beauty-queen past and down-home North Woods family life. In reality, she's the powerful governor of Alaska, the most pivotal state in the union for energy.

John McCain understood well that it's the one state that can liberate the U.S. not just from high prices but from increasingly threatening enemies whose power derives solely from high oil prices.

Alaska was purchased in 1867 explicitly to ensure America's energy future. Palin's leadership has done much to develop Alaska's energy resources, but the state is still stonewalled by Congress.

Palin's strong Alaskan presence in Washington will change that.

It's got to because America is nearly helpless in the face of a resurgent Russia intent on reclaiming its czarist empire, an Iran hellbent on acquiring nuclear weapons, a China making common cause with dictators to acquire energy and a menacing Venezuela aligning with Russia and Cuba to control sea lanes in the Caribbean, where 64% of all U.S.-bound tanker traffic passes.

These are all emerging threats. That's why Alaska has never been more critical to U.S. security interests.

No Barack, none of the time.

As long as the Dems keep the media focused on our woman, all the better.

Keep it up, boys! The more you boys attack the girl, the worse you look.

I think the recent drop in oil prices has more to do with governor Palin than the hurricane survival of the oil industry.

Well, she has had to deal with a number of Democrat (and Republican) elected officials in Congress (each hereinafter referred to as Anus (is the plural anni?).

As governor she crafted a formal agreement with Canada, I believe concerning oil.

Governor Palin has negotiated successfully with two more foreign nations as an executive than anyone else on either ticket, thanks for asking......twice.

She would also be the President of the Senate which means she could cast deciding votes.

“Palin knows energy. She's already figured out how to deliver energy to the U.S. without Congress — by championing state legislation to create a 1,712-mile natural gas pipeline across Canada to the U.S.”

“It was a major feat, negotiating with the Canadian government, educating lawmakers and getting the public behind her. In a decade, the $30 billion project will ship 4.5 million cubic feet of gas a day from the North Slope to Houston's air conditioners, Iowa's farm machines and Boston's winter furnaces.”

“There's little doubt this is the kind of leadership the U.S. needs”

Isn't Canada the 53rd state?

I think you mean the trasncanada deal? That was with a Canadian oil company, not the Canadian government. We’re not all thrilled with it either because there were two Alaskan companies that had legitimate bids in, this could have meant more American jobs and more American control over our pipeline but now it is going through Canada and to a Canadian company instead. The Anchorage Daily News has a ton of articles about this from the last year, and a good search feature so you can get the background.

Love Palin but I don’t love transcanada.

Also just to clarify, this is for natural gas not crude.

How are you postulating a pipeline from alaska to the lower 48 without involing Canada? LPG tanker s are politically infeasible.

You can hear John Bolton speak about Sarah Palin today. He is pretty convinced she’ll be just fine.

When we won WWII, it was on a river of gasoline. America was the preeminent petroleum power in the world. I’d like to see us develop coal-to-diesel, shale oil, and methane hydrate and become the world’s largest energy exporter again. Think of the jobs! Think of the effect on our GNP! Gov. Palin should champion such a vision.

Handing the project over to a Canadian company was wrong- as the saying goes “Canada my ass, it’s Alaska’s gas”

There are some pretty big side issues right now with the contracting logistics, it’s just not a dream deal.

The northslope companies already formed a group to build and run the gasline. Canada’s company competed against them. Palin said there will be only 1 line, and she chose transcanada over Denali. Well I had a massive tree fall in my yard this summer due to a strong thunderstorm. It was an immense amount of work getting the limbs cut and dragged to the woodpile. Now I have this giant stump in my yard.

For the past six weeks, I've been hacking away at it trying to get it out of the ground. Yeah, I could call a tree company and get it pulled out for a couple hundred dollars. But I'm stubborn like that. I'd rather spend the couple hundred dollars on beer, steamers and other stuff like that.

So like I said, I've spent a good part of the summer hacking away at this stump with various garden tools.

Well, ever since McCain announced Sarah Palin as a running mate, I've been attacking the stump with renewed energy. Yesterday, I had Sarah Palin on my mind as I worked on the stump and suddenly, miraculously, the stump finally came loose and I was able to pull it out of the massive hole in the ground. I triumphantly dragged the giant stump into the woods, giving full credit to Sarah Palin.

Had McCain picked Lieberman or even Mitt Romney, my previous favorite for VP, I have no doubt that that stump would still be in the ground today.

Good point! We have the Dem POTUS-in-waiting trying to convince us that he has more experience than our no. 2. He doesn’t, but it’s nice to see him try. Meanwhile, our no. 1 looks over the scene, smiling, and awaiting his due recognition as the one we want in charge. (I’m sorry, the title, “The One”, has been taken, hasn’t it?) Well, you know what I mean.
