New Poll shows no convention bounce for Obama

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- On the eve of the Republican convention, a new national poll suggests the race for the White House remains even.

Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain are in a virtual tie, according to the latest poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Sunday night shows the Obama-Biden ticket leading the McCain-Palin ticket by one point, 49 percent to 48 percent, with the statistical margin of error.

The survey was conducted Friday through Sunday, after both the conclusion of the Democratic convention and Sen. John McCain's selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

A previous CNN poll, taken just one week earlier, suggested the race between McCain, R-Arizona, and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, was tied at 47 percent each.

"The convention and particularly Obama's speech seems to be well-received. And the selection of Sarah Palin as the GOP running mate, also seems to be well-received. So why is the race still a virtual tie? Probably because the two events created equal and opposite bounces assuming that either one created a bounce at all," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

Hi. Seems to be that the Dems. are “dissing” Alaska by saying it’s a small state, and it’s not connected to the 48 states.

I suspect the rural voters feel that they have a lot more in common with Alaskans than they do with Washingtonians. Thus a slam on Alaska becomes a slam on voters in the heartland.

More good news. This is a registered-voter poll and therefore oversamples Democrats. Combine that with the Bradley/Dinkins/Wilder effect, and McCain and Palin should be a good 5-7 points up.

did anyone else but me see the Frank Luntz (AARP-sponsored) focus group today. . . vast majority were libs in the tank for BHO

This is no surprise. The AARP are total shills for the Democratic Party and always have been.

Biggest waste of campaign dollars since John Connally spent $10 million of his own money to net one delegate during the 1976 Republican primaries.

Just like us bitter people clinging to out guns and religion .....
It’s simply never a good idea to pi$$ off an american.
There are alot of americans disgusted with standard party run politics. Mccain, whether he knew it or not, has unleashed a core and fundemental force into this contest. I sincerely hope Sarah holds true to her principles, listens to advisors, and proceeds in a strong, supportive role.......
until the VP debates...
when I would suggest she give BlowJoe a taste of serious whupa$$ Alaska style.
Also thought all the candidates spouses should have a winner take all pink slip race down Chester in Bakersfield - but that may be off topic.

Rush's editing team put together an audio collection of every time Obama said the word “I” during his acceptance speech.

Obama must have said the word about a hundred times. “I” will do this or that - “I” understand blah, blah, blah - “I” want change. On and on it went - I, I, I, I, I, I

Then after 2 straight minutes of this, Obama says, “ But this isn't about me!” I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes!

“This is no surprise. The AARP are total shills for the Democratic Party and always have been.”

Damn. Guess I’ve been in denial about learning more about them since I’ve been eligible for membership :-)))

So it’s about the govt./nanny state programs, right? Because they overwhelmingly voted for things like nationalized health care and against ANY privatization of social security.

The bottom line reason for the focus group they sponsored was because they wanted to test 4 of their new election commercials. (of course, toward the end, some of their “officials” said they never endorse candidates.

I feel the same way. Like the end of a movie with a surprise twist. A new piece of information is given, and it radically alters your perception of all the previous events in the film. Think "The Sixth Sense" or "The Usual Suspects".

It wasn't until I read the People Magazine article that everything fell into place. When McCain said he picked Palin because she is a reformer who fought special interests, the whole Maverick thing suddenly made sense. McCain isn't just someone who wants to be president. He wants to reform government. And he wants to have an impact even after he's gone. It's not just some words he's saying to get elected. It's his reason for living.

Now the press is going nuts, because they think that McCain is just some affable old geezer they could roll over to get their man elected, like Dole in 1996. Maybe in the end they will, but McCain's not going down without a fight.

Long way to go yet. Axelrod is pretty sharp. And so are his elbows.

He hasn't many opportunities to "close the deal" left, barring something totally unforeseen. His guy was suppose to be ahead by double digits, and has been in a dead heat for a while now.

The momentum is going to McCain, and I don't see anything on the horizon to reverse it, do you?

“McCain says stupid stuff”

Can almost leave one speechless.

Oh it did!

There was another friend of mine there when he said it, and my other friend is very conservative like me, and he just said, “Oh my gosh!” and laughed. I then said to my liberal friend, “You really don’t want us to tear you apart for saying that, you would just look foolish.” my conservative friend said, “we don’t even need to argue with him to make him sound foolish, its a typical Democrat response. If he can think of anything stupid McCain has said, I will give him 100 bucks.” My liberal friend then left the room and didn’t say anything more about politics the rest of the night.

Oh snap! Is it too late for Biden to have an “accident” and Obamasiah gets it right this time with Hillary?

Biden would literally have to be killed for that to happen. I suspect that Biden has a LOT of dirt on Obama that Obama would prefer to stay hidden.

After all, Biden's own son tried to have Larry Sinclair locked up, who knows what may or may not have been said in those interrogation rooms.

The look on the Obamaniks faces when they are challenged with facts, is priceless. Typically, they spout talking points that they have accepted as gospel.

They have no idea that they're being used.

Now the press is going nuts, because they think that McCain is just some affable old geezer they could roll over to get their man elected, like Dole in 1996.

*THIS* was the first error of team Obama. Once they secured the primary process, they believed they could put it on autopilot to victory in November, with McCain putting up only token resistance. By the time they realized they were in an actual election battle, they had lost all initiative, were on the defensive, and off-balance. Schmidt is not going to allow them to regain that balance, let alone reverse the momentum.

The mainstream press is no longer a significant factor, as all the damage done to "The Anointed One" was done in spite of their cover. I don't see Axelrod being able to recover easily, and they've lost too much ground to get to where they were at the beginning. McCain *is* going to win this, I'm convinced...

It’s not just weighted. The Bradley Effect makes this poll very bad indeed for Obama.
