ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- On the eve of the Republican convention, a new national poll suggests the race for the White House remains even.
Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain are in a virtual tie, according to the latest poll.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Sunday night shows the Obama-Biden ticket leading the McCain-Palin ticket by one point, 49 percent to 48 percent, with the statistical margin of error.
The survey was conducted Friday through Sunday, after both the conclusion of the Democratic convention and Sen. John McCain's selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.
A previous CNN poll, taken just one week earlier, suggested the race between McCain, R-Arizona, and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, was tied at 47 percent each.
"The convention and particularly Obama's speech seems to be well-received. And the selection of Sarah Palin as the GOP running mate, also seems to be well-received. So why is the race still a virtual tie? Probably because the two events created equal and opposite bounces assuming that either one created a bounce at all," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

“He may be better than Rove himself”.
Schmidt, you magnificent bastard!
“Call it the Sarah Palin affect. And my FRiends, its only beginning. It will take hold and cause a shrieking and gnashing of teeth you havent seen since Biblical accounts.”
How I PRAY you’re right. But there’s much criticism played up about her “inexperience” and readiness to be president on “day one” (I know, it’s unfair and untrue).
We’d better not be cocky just yet (maybe I’m too superstitious:-))).
Hi. Seems to be that the Dems. are “dissing” Alaska by saying it’s a small state, and it’s not connected to the 48 states. What does that geography have to do with anything? Is that an extension of the Hillary Clinton logic that the states in which she won primaries were more important than the states Obama won?
Well, Biden has had brain surgery, twice.

“Comes up with a veep that’s real change and springboards off the women’s rights stuff.”
the “women’s rights stuff” is the Dems’ point of contention with Palin (besides her “lack of experience”) - i.e. the classic pro-choice, extreme paranoia that between them, JSM and Palin will appoint judges who’ll overturn roe v. wade.
this is a fixation with women voters on the “other side”.
I happened to have switched over to C-span and caught the Luntz focus group. Many of them seemed to have formed an opinion of Sarah Palin, yet none of them had seen her speak on Friday. I always wonder about the people on these focus group and as to whether they are telling truth when they claim to be undecided.
OUTSTANDING recap! I’ve been loving life since Team McCain started landing the body blows.
I had a friend say to me during an online chat yesterday, “I just never expect a Republican to chose a women vp”
I then said, “well why not? do you think Republicans hate women or something?”
he then said, “I just thought they stick to just stay the same”
This is my same friend who said he won’t vote for McCain becacuse, in his words, “McCain says stupid stuff”
THESE PEOPLE DON’T GET IT!!!
“Palin and Gustav made everyone forget the convention.”
It’s just awful that because of Gustav, the repubs may not be able to have much of a convention of their (our) own. It’s needed and deserved. Really does make you wonder if BHO has a deal with the devil. I’m partly serious here!
no, I was watching Palin with Maria Bartoromo, that was very good, btw. Excellent assessment of Alaska’s potential energy contributions.

The most amazing thing is, very few people have actually noticed what has been occurring. I *almost* missed it myself. It was only within the last two-three weeks that I pieced it together, and only when I started back-tracking did I come to understand the game plan. It's been absolutely brilliant!

She’s got what it takes to win men over IN ADDITION to good looks.
They're elitists. Pompous, arrogant, snobs.
Alaska is Hicksville.
"Guns? Snowmobiles? How gauche! How uncivilized! Waiter, a little more Chardonnay for my friend. Have you tried the baked Brie?"
In the future, when one looks up the word "Pwned" at wikipedia, one is going to see a picture of David Axelrod, since he has been "pwned" at every turn of this campaign thus far...

I guess Olbermann will have to take back that “get a shovel Joe” comment now eh?
Can almost leave one speechless.
Perhaps they should rename the Democrat Party and call it the Dumbass Party.
Of course, they'd ask Dumb Ass what? And we'd have to explain, Dumb Ass a stump.
Now where is that Cuss Jar, that the late, great Tony Snow (G-d Bless him) made so famous?
BO and little Joe gotta dead cat bounce. ROTFLOL
