New Poll shows no convention bounce for Obama

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (CNN) -- On the eve of the Republican convention, a new national poll suggests the race for the White House remains even.

Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain are in a virtual tie, according to the latest poll.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll released Sunday night shows the Obama-Biden ticket leading the McCain-Palin ticket by one point, 49 percent to 48 percent, with the statistical margin of error.

The survey was conducted Friday through Sunday, after both the conclusion of the Democratic convention and Sen. John McCain's selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

A previous CNN poll, taken just one week earlier, suggested the race between McCain, R-Arizona, and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, was tied at 47 percent each.

"The convention and particularly Obama's speech seems to be well-received. And the selection of Sarah Palin as the GOP running mate, also seems to be well-received. So why is the race still a virtual tie? Probably because the two events created equal and opposite bounces assuming that either one created a bounce at all," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

Thank Steve Schmidt and team. These are some solid professionals!

Win or lose, Steve Schmidt will be in very high demand in future GOP races. Holding Obambi to little or no bounce after his convention spectacle is a minor miracle in itself.

His rapid responses and commercials have been right on the money as well. He may be better than Rove himself.

A candidate not getting a sustained bounce out of their convention usually spells doom. To be fair to Obama, he faced a party sharply divided into camps, a distinct disadvantage, but you won't here that stuff on the liberal channels. Everything is supposed to be just peachy keen.

I don't trust polls for anything, but they are interesting to talk about. Zogby actually has McCain up by 1%. This is actually bad news for a candidate who supposedly delivered the "speech of the century". It would indicate his campaign has hit a wall. If McCain gets any kind of bounce out of his convention, and it would be surprising if he didn't, he would have the momentum going to election day.

As they say in football... theres still a lot of time left on the clock, but this McCain/Palin ticket is a winner, the time is only going to work against Obama, and for McCain. Nobody is interested in learning more about Biden. But boy are they going to be interested in meeting Gov. Pilan.

Speaking of polls... Rasmussen has the worst news yet for Obama... seven states are shifting, and all of them are going in McCains direction. The Electoral Votes are coming around McCains way, he now only trails by 10 EV's, and he hasn't even had his convention yet.

"If your state trooper brother-in-law in law threatened to kill your father and shot his own son with a taser....wouldn't you tell his boss too?"

Wasn't his son he tased, but his step-son (iow, not his biologically). Trooper Wooten has/had issues, and had no business remaining a police officer, plain and simple...

It’s the Hillary and Sarah factors ...

and the 2nd resolves the 1st.

Well according to Democrats:

1. Sarah is just a small town mayor. Some Dems. don’t even mention that she is a governor of a state.

2. Alaska is a small insignificant state.

3. Sarah has only been governor for a bit less than two years.

4. Alaska isn’t even connected to the lower 48 states.

5. She doesn’t have foreign policy experience.

6. She’s against abortion.

7. Since she’s against abortion, she’s against “women’s rights” also.

8. She’s a former beauty pageant contestant.

From my limited vantage point, all I can say is that this looks like perfection.
And the Chicago Machine and David Axelrod are taking a beating.

Keep it coming! Viva Steve Schmidt & Co!

CNN is reporting this? Has hell frozen over?

More and more people are starting to actually take notice of the elections. They can no longer hide the fact that not only is "The Zero" not commandingly in the lead, by double digits, but that he's on, and has been on, since he got back from Europe, the defensive.

As much as CNN, et al, would like to spin this, they can't. The SS "Audacity of Hype" is hulled below the waterline, taking on water at an extremely rapid rate, and listing badly. She's going down, and no way to save her...

Its interesting Palin increased the male support for McCain.

I am about as much of a male chauvenist pig as any man, but I think Palin is great, she will be perfect as the first woman veep and even more perfect as the Prez in 2012. She's got what it takes to win men over and it isn't just great looks.

speaking of polls, did anyone else but me see the Frank Luntz (AARP-sponsored) focus group today on cspan 1? (it’s supposed to be on again around 12:37 am Central Time)

Usually, I love these, but this one was done with around 27 people in St. Paul, and I swear the vast majority were libs in the tank for BHO and negative over McCain/Palin, particularly Palin.

ok, guess I’m a geek about this stuff - but it really bugged me - did anyone else see it? if not, watch it if you can.

Not that Obama’s speech was particularly memorable, either.

I,I,I,I,I,I don't think it was either.

No it wasn't because it the kind of of speech a Democrat candidate gives to primary voters. It doesn't win over the middle - and hasn't. The talk of more big government liberal programs. That's the kind of talk that doesn't play well down South and in the Mountain West.

“Please, could someone come up with a nice talking point to counter the “under ethics investigation” BS????
How’s this: “If your state trooper brother-in-law in law threatened to kill your father and shot his own son with a taser....wouldn’t you tell his boss too?”

EXACTLY!!! No story here. I think she also either fired his boss for NOT getting rid of him, or started action to do so, btw, and that’s why she’s “under investigation”.

did anyone else but me see the Frank Luntz (AARP-sponsored) focus group today on cspan 1? I did. You are right about a number of them being in the tank for Obama. The panel was supposed to be composed of undecided voters. At one point Lunzt asked point blank, "Did you two lie to get on this panel?" The panel was near unanimous that a accountability was more important than any other single issue. Yet when questioned by Morton Kondrake, "what Obama is accountable for?", no one could could provide a real answer.

Hey Dilbert, my fellow San Diegan, Took my daughter back to school this weekend ... last night we went out for dinner with her roommate's Mom, who out of the blue said, "Can you imagine that there are people that won't vote for Obama because he's Black? And can you imagine, McCain picks the Governor of Alaska? Alaska??? Hahahahah!"

Mrs S gave me "The Look" when I asked her, "Is Alaska not one of our 57 States?" I had to stop at that point ... or I'd have had to sleep in the car instead of our hotel room.

Oh snap! Is it too late for Biden to have an “accident” and Obamasiah gets it right this time with Hillary?

I've been concerned that if Obama starts to think the ball has been snatched away from him -- well, Biden has had brain surgery, twice. Maybe he'll need brain surgery a couple more times, and have to be replaced on the ticket by Hillary. Have you seen recent video of Biden? The man isn't playing with a full deck.

McCain is some sort of misunderestimated political judo master lately. He uses his opponent's strengths against the opponent and emerges relatively unscathed.

This is the handiwork of Steven Schmidt, who has run an absolutely brilliant campaign, in a very tricky scenario, thus far. It's been a real masterpiece.

He could not deliver a fatal knockout blow to "The Zero" before the donque convention was finished, lest "The Zero" be replaced by Hillary. So, what does he do? He weakens "The Anointed" by the death of a thousand cuts, starting with the Celebrity ad, just after Oh-Bummer returns from Europe... Bam!! First blood!!

This gets followed in rapid succession by "The One" ad, Oh-Bummer now on the defensive makes a gaffe, during the drilling debate, leading with his chin. Bam!! Yet another well-timed strike which bloodies him. One after the other, none of them dealing a fatal blow, but bleeding him badly, crippling him, and most importantly, keeping him on the defensive, and not getting any traction to reverse the loss of poll numbers. By this time, Team Obama, thoroughly rattled, make a poor showing at Saddleback, muff the expected response to the Russian invasion of Georgia, and lastly totally blow the method for revealing their VP pick, which turned out to be real "amateur hour".

The net result of all this, was to bleed Oh-Bummers lead to a dead heat, coming into the donque convention.

Team McCain did their homework, throughout this, and applied just enough pressure to to the maximum amount of damage to "The Zero", without damaging him enough to make him too untenable to go forward. They set a trap for the Dems, and they fell right into it, keeping Obama as the standard bearer, totally hacking off the Hillary folks, and setting up the latest one-two devastation punch they just pulled off.

Thursday night, McCain does the "Convention Night" ad, which gives a gracious nod to "The Zero" for his "historic achievement", while also stating tomorrow we will be right back at it... Little did Axelrod, and Team Obama know, that the tomorrow stated was literally that, the very next morning, when McCain reveals Governor Palin as his running mate, accomplishing three things simultaneously.

First, he kills Obama's post-convention speech bounce dead in its tracks. Secondly, he throws a curveball at Team Obama, with a Veep candidate which they were totally unprepared for. Lastly, comapre the two revelations side, by side. "Amateur hour" sloppy on the part of Axelrod and Team Obama, and smoothly, but in total secrecy by Schmidt and Team McCain. The contrasts speak for themselves.

Schmidt was a protege of Karl Rove, but I believe, that this campaign has proved that the student outdid the mentor...
