MUNICH, GERMANY (AP) - Fish oil supplements may work slightly better than a popular cholesterol-reducing drug to help patients with chronic heart failure, according to new research released Sunday.
Chronic heart failure is a condition that occurs when the heart becomes enlarged and cannot pump blood efficiently around the body.

They will thaw, be ok. My sis takes 3 @ 1000 mg for depression and ‘brain fog.’ My husband saw a great article on Fish Oil at his cardiologists — said it was good for cholesterol, good for arrhythmias, depression, joint aches. What else? This cardiologist poo=poos most herbal things, but he is a big proponent of FO. My friend takes it and her hair is just beautiful, healthy, shiny. Carlson’s is supposed to be the best.
Someone told me you cannot overdo it — If you could, of course, the Norwegians would be dying left and right. hahah.
So do I, along with 2 caps a day of red yeast rice. All the research I've done leads to this trio (Omega oil, red yeast rice, niacin)as a synergistic complex that has not only lowered my cholesterol from 248 to 175 but raised my HDL (good chol) to 78....way over the norm; my doctor is astounded...and told me to keep doing it.
(For those who have never taken it—God help you if you burp after taking it....)
Get fish oil in enteric capsules that don't break down till they get to the small intestine. That way they don't have an aftertaste.
How does Omega 3 fish oil compare to taking cod liver oil? I’ve been taking cod liver oil, but boy, it’s vile stuff. I have to hold my nose when I take it.
***The dark green, leafy, cruciferous vegetables (collards, kale, turnip greens, mustard greens, watercress, etc) are also excellent sources of Omega-3 fatty acids....and they taste a heck of a lot better than fish oil.****
The veges counteract the Coumadin I take. I suppliment with SARDINES! (and catfish, salmon, trout.)
For anyone interested, Costco Kirkland brand is the best I have found. Very potent and the capsule is enteric so absolutely “No burp”.
Italian researchers gave nearly 3,500 patients a daily omega-3 pill, derived from fish oils. Roughly the same number of patients were given placebo pills. Patients were followed for an average of four years. In the group of patients taking the fish oil pills, 1,981 died of heart failure or were admitted to the hospital with the problem. In the patients on placebo pills, 2,053 died or were admitted to the hospital for heart failure. In a parallel study, the same team of Italian doctors gave 2,285 patients the drug rosuvastatin, also known as Crestor, and gave placebo pills to 2,289 people. Patients were then tracked for about four years. The doctors found little difference in heart failure rates between the two groups. Comparing the results from both studies, the researchers concluded that fish oil is slightly more effective than the drug because the oil performed better against a placebo than did Crestor.
It seems the difference in numbers is not even worth mentioning, and cannot be directy linked to fish oil. I would rather have seen a study between Crestor and fish oil directly.
Don’t take too much fishoil as ovedose of the ‘vitamin A’ can be lethal. I think some early explorers found out the hard way.
Don't eat polar bear liver; it contains a leathal dose of vitamin A.
I try to make sure the fish oil is not rancid, and keep it in the fridge. Seems to help with the burps.
I would throw them away if they smell fishy!
Folks, just make sure you get enough Vitamin E (preferably a full spectrum one) if you take fish oil. Mail me for more info.
Red yeast rice is next on my list....the doctor was holding off till I got use to the Omega-3 and Niacin.
Sam’s has a combination oil made from fishoil, flaxseed and something else. I think it is a better product than fishoil alone.
I get mine in the vitamin section in my supermarket....in this case, either Shoprite or Stop 'n' Shop.
It seems to be commonly available.
