Sarah Palin: conservatives find the girl of their dreams

The Alaskan governor’s family life and political views press the right’s buttons Sarah Baxter

When Sarah Palin stepped into the spotlight as John McCain’s running mate in Dayton, Ohio, and promised that women could “shatter that glass ceiling once and for all”, it was an electrifying moment in a presidential election that had already produced its share of upsets and surprises.

History was on the march again the morning after Barack Obama became the first African-American to accept his party’s White House nomination. After the fireworks, the 80,000-strong crowd who had cheered Obama to the skies at the Mile High stadium in Denver woke up with a hangover.

“We may be seeing the first woman president. As a Democrat, I am reeling,” said Camille Paglia, the cultural critic. “That was the best political speech I have ever seen delivered by an American woman politician. Palin is as tough as nails.”

With her beehive hairdo and retro specs, Palin, 44, has a “naughty librarian vibe”, according to Craig Ferguson, the Scottish comedian who stars on late-night US television. However, the selection of Palin, the governor of Alaska and a mother of five, as the first female Republican vice-presidential nominee is no joke for the Democrats.

She needs it. They “wanted enough kids for a basketball team”, she once said, but Trig was born this year with Down’s syndrome. Palin knew there were complications while she was pregnant but never considered an abortion. When he was born, she said, “I’m looking at him right now and I see perfection. Yeah, he has an extra chromosome. I keep thinking: in our world, what is normal and what is perfect?” Undaunted, she held a meeting as governor three days after giving birth. “I just put down the BlackBerrys and pick up the breast pump,” she said of her life as a working mother.

The Vice President’s role is usually about as exciting as a Vegemite samwich. This time, tho’ — this time I have the feeling that the Veep could be much more interesting than the POTUS.

Would someone tell me why we're supposed to believe a woman who is apparently willing to soil her good name by running on the same ticket with a guy who:
Voted against Alaska Drilling
Received an F - From Gun Owners of America
Said he prefers "clean government" to the First Amendment
Believes in Global Warming "science."
Voted for Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

Governor Palin--exactly WHAT kind of reform are you talking about?

She may be a babe, guys, but I'm not sure she has a conscience.

Maybe, if she were at the top of the ticket, but as long as the choice is between a fascist like McCain and a Bolshevick like Obama, I’m just not thinking any person of conscience has much of a choice at all.

Here in Illinois, we have a Lt Gov that many disagrees with the Gov. Considering the den of vipers we have, any voice of dissent is good.

As for Palin we'll wait and see, enjoying the eye-candy as we do.

Perhaps he’ll learn a few home truths from someone who lives them, particularly about Alaska drilling and gun owners.

Look, she was given the opportunity to change the country and change the GOP. I can’t fault her for giving it a try. Sure, I’d rather she be at the top of the ticket, bu hopefully that day will come.

Dare I say it, a female version of Dick Cheney?

Of course she's a she, much younger, much prettier (hahaha) and probably a better shot.

I think she can equal Cheney in the Whoop Ass department.

Being a Mom with five kids qualifies her for most jobs in this world, I reckon — except maybe Pope.

She will make a great POTUS, one day.

I was thinking of this last night....I don’t think McCain really knows what he stepped into. I don’t see him being a very happy fella as POTUS because this barracuda will be holding his feet to the fire, with us as back up.

That’s my bitter view.

McCain picked her, not the other way around.
Reagan picked Bush. hmmm
Bush picked Quayle. hmmm
W Bush picked Cheney. ok but that wasn’t truly exciting. (don’t even ask about Nixon or Ford)

this is the most exciting VP pick I have ever seen.

There's been discussion over whether or not Governor Palin is tough enough to take on Joe Biden in the upcoming debates. I was browsing through the comments when I ran across this gem:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I'm not at all worried about Governor Palin. Heck, Sarah Palin's couch is tougher than Joe Biden...

At first glance, I thought the Governor had already bagged Joe.
