A spectre is haunting the liberal elites of New York and Washington--the spectre of a young, attractive, unapologetic conservatism, rising out of the American countryside, free of the taint (fair or unfair) of the Bush administration and the recent Republican Congress, able to invigorate a McCain administration and to govern beyond it.
That spectre has a name--Sarah Palin, the 44-year-old governor of Alaska chosen by John McCain on Friday to be his running mate. There she is: a working woman who's a proud wife and mother; a traditionalist in important matters who's broken through all kinds of barriers; a reformer who's a Republican; a challenger of a corrupt good-old-boy establishment who's a conservative; a successful woman whose life is unapologetically grounded in religious belief; a lady who's a leader.
So what we will see in the next days and weeks--what we have already seen in the hours after her nomination--is an effort by all the powers of the old liberalism, both in the Democratic party and the mainstream media, to exorcise this spectre. They will ridicule her and patronize her. They will distort her words and caricature her biography. They will appeal, sometimes explicitly, to anti-small town and anti-religious prejudice. All of this will be in the cause of trying to prevent the American people from arriving at their own judgment of Sarah Palin.
That's why Palin's spectacular performance in her introduction in Dayton was so important. Her remarks were cogent and compelling. Her presentation of herself was shrewd and savvy. I heard from many who watched Palin--many of them not predisposed to support her--about how moved they were by her remarks, her composure, and her story. She will have a chance to shine again Wednesday night at the Republican convention.

My family is so jazzed about the pick that we’re starting to think Sarah may just be the ticket to take back congress!
During the campaign, I just hope Palin won’t get emotional and tear up or cry. The media wolves are out and waiting to pounce and destroy her.
Unless there’s something really bad that has yet come to light, I don’t think much of anything the left says or does will matter. She appears to be the real thing and not a cheap suit that will fold in a stiff breeze like the left’s candidate. Finally something positive and real in this campaign. Something that isn’t driven by guilt but instead something to value and respect.

A popular woman like Sarah Palin is going to be bullet proof in this campaign. Any attacks against her will backfire and simply bring more supporters to her side.
Palin was my choice from the first time I’d been made aware of her, about 3 months ago.
And as far as “experience” (that totally unexamined cliche) goes, she did more in a few years of elected office, with her mayoralty, her Board position, and her Governorship, than Obama, not to mention lethargic veteran Biden, have done in their combined FORTY. So the experience issue is one they’d be smarter not to throw in her face. They will lose hands-down. ALL they can hope for is “death-by-a-thousand-cuts” from surrogates, plus keeping their fingers crossed as to whether Biden can “win” in debates or match-ups with her. It’s a lost cause for the Dems, now more than ever. They thought their surge would never end, but from here on in, it’s all downhill.And it will be nothing but fun to watch the quickest erosion of popularity any of us have ever witnessed.My only question now is, Paul Newman , Orville Redenbacher, or Jiffy Pop?.( Maybe Paul Newman, just for the irony of it)
She’s perfect. I, too, contributed for the first time. She seals the deal, gutsy move by McCain, and the kind I expected him to make. I can very much identify with THIS woman.

Exactly my take... According to a lot of those who kept badgering everyone about the non-entity of Ruby Julie-Annie as a GOP pick in the papers and on t.v., the Rockefeller wing isn't gonna get the complete liberal administration they wanted.
Strange days, eh? I find myself seriously considering what I NEVER thought I'd be seriously considering: giving money to McMeMeMe.
And saying words I never thought I'd hear myself saying: "Well-done, Senator McCain."
Now if he can just keep himself from screwing it up... that's the nail-biter.

This lady is not one to get emotional and tear up; the only possibility of that is if she’s attacked unfairly by
Biden/Obama/Surrogates on a personal level, like if they play up a story about how she brought about her Down’s SYndrome son’s problems by getting on a plane when she was 8 months pregnant. Such attacks would seal their fate, as if it needed to be sealed at this point. What I can see Biden doing, though, is getting all humorously defensive about how hard it is to argue with a woman, because everyone will think he’s beating up on her.

Thanks for posting this. A lot of us went to bed last night excited about Sarah Palin reviving the conservative cause in America but worried about the attacks this woman and her family are going to have to endure.
She seems to be a tough cookie who won’t back down from a fight. But it’s going to get rough. Very rough. We’re all going to have to stick together as conservatives to help the Republican Party reshape itself.
Well said. That’s the first thing I thought of yesterday when the announcement was made. Pity the Obama/Biden ticket. Better yet pity them not at all.
McCain made the best choice possible. The Obama staff has to have their brains bouncing around their skulls today.
McCain will do it again. What a great day for our country.
Sarah Palin is the silver bullet to the socialism presented by Obama/Biden.
The leftists know this and there is great fear amongst them.

I don’t think she will cry. Fox ran a clip of her this morning, about Hillary whining, saying that it doesn’t serve you well, you have to keep on working...
