Now I finally have a reason to vote FOR McCain and not AGAINST Obama. She is a great choice. She handled her speech beautifully this morning. I never saw her look at notes, nor the teleprompter. (unlike obama) She has guts and I think she can handle Biden in a debate.

When we were in Alaska last year, I visited with an old high school friend (I went to high school in Anchorage). He is active in Republican politics now, and he could not lay enough praise on Gov. Palin. He convinced me a year ago that she would be a most excellent Veep.

I am SO jazzed over this pick!

I hope you are right, I really do.

The only problem is that I have seen way too many people I trusted to be conservative and "Law and Order" types this election cycle take a less than conservative stand on this issue.

Foreign policy and relations are people relations writ large. Sarah has a 80+% approval rating in Alaska.

Sarah will be able to handle foreign policy just fine and as you say, she'll look for informed advisers as needed.

Can you imagine, during the VP debates -- the first time that Biden even hints that "defective" babies should be "choiced," Sarah is going to hand him his ass. Can't wait to see that!

Of course. We can plan on that and worse. I hope she has some idea of the type of people she is dealing with. The good news is that Sen. McCain has some very shrewd political operators on his team.

This gives her almost a lock on being the next GOP nominee for President, I want that person to be strongly against Amnesty or the GOP does not get my vote this year.

True. And I am amazed that McCain actually took into consideration what the base wanted (if this is why he chose her). It would mean there's hope for him to not act like a lib in office.

Actually, the choice, and the way it was executed, right down to McCains video last night, is what suddenly made me a McCain supporter.

I have to admit that McCain or whoever is orchestrating his campaign is doing it wonderfully. So much different than the typical Republican style of playing it soft and careful. And the fact that he chose a conservative (something that still amazes me - I'm still looking at her bios trying to find the weak spot because I still can't believe it) says volumns about his thinking about the future of the party too, not just himself. I mean, as far as 'his' party goes, he chose someone that will be vastly more popular than himself. He put ego aside. Amazing!

Your guess is as good as mine. Russia and Canada are our only neighbors. I'm not to sure about the Russians, they are really numerous here in Wasilla. Any number of them could be illegal. As for the Canadians, I've never heard of and illegal from Canada. Why bother?

For some reason, I tend to think she will want to tighten borders, or at least ENFORCE existing laws. I hope I'm right on this.

You're too modest. I never heard of Palin until a few months ago, and I'm a long way from Wasilla. I'm surprised that there are many Ruskies there. Any idea why? I guess it's obvious if they can get there and make a life without getting locked up or being deported.

As for the Canadians, IMO it wouldn't necessarily be a question of "why bother?". Canadians and Americans really are different, red state Americans and your average Canadians anyway.

By the way, a few years ago I read an article by a couple of Alaskan socioligists who were challenged by a Canadian sociologist and acquaintance to do a study of two small towns across a river from each other, one in Canada and one in AK. The challanger thought they would conclude that the Canadian one was oh so much more superior to the American one.

They found that the Canadian town was tidier, had a better library, pleasant streets, more government jobs, etc, but were uptight about money and always scheming to get more grants (shades of my little isolated Canadian community), while the American side wasn't very tidy or pretty, but the people were inventive , figured out ways to get things done, and had a much more cheerful and vibrant community. The sociologists stayed on the Canadian side, why not.

I've tried a few times to find the article via Google, with no luck. Have you ever heard of that story?
