Sparks fly as GOP battles over 'amnesty,' 'anchor babies'

Republicans seeking to put more teeth in the party's immigration platform ran into opposition from delegates who largely argued they didn't want to conflict with Sen. John McCain's positions.

But the divide over hot-button topics such as "anchor babies" and "amnesty" was further complicated by McCain's public shift in the wake of his failed "comprehensive immigration reform" bill, with the presumptive Republican presidential candidate now acknowledging the strong mandate to emphasize securing the borders.

The platform will be put before the party's delegates for a vote on the opening day of the convention Monday in the Twin Cities.

Today, the platform committee voted down an amendment to deny citizenship to babies born in the U.S. to illegal immigrants, reported Stephen Spruiell on National Review's blog The Corner.

The sponsor of the amendment, activist Kendal Unruh of Castle Rock, Colo., explained that when she was sent to the committee "by the people, the number one issue on their minds was immigration."

"They told me, 'You must represent our values on immigration,'" she said.

Unruh rejected the argument McCain is opposed to any law that would eliminate anchor babies.

"Colorado is a swing state, and the number one issue that decides swing districts is illegal immigration," she said. "… McCain needs to win Colorado, and this is a winning issue for McCain in Colorado."

The “anchor baby” issue and the issue of a president being “natural born” both have some resonance this time.

We’d better pay attention.

The eventual end to the existence of the Republican Party begins now. Both conservatives and conservatism are truly without a political home right now. Both conservatives and conservatism have already lost on November 4, and it isn’t even November 4 yet! There truly is no way to fully measure my frustration with the present Republican Party and its continuing rejection of “everything conservative” on ALL OF THE ISSUES.

There should be NO question as to how this portion of the platform should be written.

The American public SCREAMED at these guys last summer, no amnesty, build the damn fence, jail employers that hire criminal aliens, etc.

Maybe we’re gonna have to scream some more?

Not true.

20% of all people polled state that they are very conservative.

40% of those polled claim they are somewhat conservative.

Right there you have 60% - those are the people REPUBLICANS have to get to the polls this coming November.

Keeping the GOP on a conservative track is what will be hard and it is imperative that at least TEN hard and fast, bedrock principles of Conservatism be a part of that platform. Then those TEN PRINCIPLE must be marketed and expounded to the voting public until they have them memorized by heart.

The person who can do that best for the GOP, the person who has already been doing the best reseach on this, is Newt Gingrich.

Luckily sane minds prevailed. Denying citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants comes across as mean-spirited and hateful, and adding such to the Republican platform would have been political suicide.

Denying citizenship to children born to temporary visitors is hardly meanspirited. Just about every country in the world does not.

In fact, our own law requires that a foreign visitor who gives birth to a child in the United States must ADD THE CHILD TO THE FAMILY VISA.

Think about that for a second ~ through normal action of the law we already consider children born to foreign visitors as NON CITIZENs. After all, Americans don't need to be added to anyone's visa to visit the US do they?!

BTW, unless you have an immigration visa you are simply one of a wide variety of foreign visitors.

And if this truly doesn’t happen for the GOP, then what? Where would the majority of conservative voters seriously go if not be forced to vote for “maverick” McCain for POTUS? Yes, McCain is a maverick politician, and he isn’t really a conservative Republican. The Republican Platform Committee is also already creating its political platform so that it’s truly acceptable to McCain, and this means moving more to the political left on a variety of issues. If everybody really thinks that it’s truly just the Democrats that are presently fighting among themselves, then everybody truly needs to wait to see what really happens among both “RINO” Republican delegates and truly conservative Republican delegates at next months RNC. Both major political parties are truly “messed up” politically, with both still moving leftwards instead of just staying put. The R’s, at every political level, should always be just a conservative political party instead of destroying themselves with their ongoing “big tent” mentality!

As opposed to social suicide where our country is overtaken by a foreign culture. Oh, and political suicide follows. Why kid yourself? They will not vote Republican.

Not as long as the Republican Party continues to entertain the notion of seeking the support of far right xenophobes. Luckily, there are plans in motion to finally remove the last foothold of the nativist right from the party which will hopefully go along way into bringing Hispanics to our side.

Does anyone know how the global warming discussion ended up? Was it put in the party platform?

“The Republican Platform Committee is also already creating its political platform so that it’s truly acceptable to McCain”

I am truly just sickened over this. Somehow, someway, this MUST be stopped from happening. How many issues is this now? English as official language, anchor babies, amnesty, global warming, drilling...and so on. The GOP will continue to ignore us and lean as far left as needed in order to accommodate McCain.

o hogwash...you are listening to your darkside. McCain has and will be a fiscal conservative and knows that we have to curtail spending for the survival of our country. He will also elect great supreme court judges and is very pro military. He was calling for more troops to finish the job in Iraq long ago.

How can a President McCain truly succeed in his federal judicial picks when they all also truly need to be approved by the majority of the next U.S. Senate? If the next U.S. Senate is truly a majority of socialistic politicians from both major political parties, then no conservative judges will really be approved by a majority of U.S. Senators! Saying, “Vote for McCain, and he will pick conservative judges for all judicial vacancies!” is just B.S., if the next U.S. Senate is truly also still a leftist majority. BTW, how can anybody truly be so sure that McCain really means what he says on any given issue? This is “maverick” McCain that is being talked about, and McCain isn’t really a conservative politician. McCain may win the Presidency and then become a very leftist POTUS on some to all issues throughout his entire duration as such. McCain truly already has a long history of upsetting conservatives on a lot of issues.
