A new report reveals that former party girl and John Edwards mistress Rielle Hunter wrote e-mails chronicling her affair with presidential wannabe John Edwards.

Early in April 2006, Hunter e-mailed a pal about a trip down South to visit Edwards and discussed the downside of "being in love with a (still somewhat dysfunctional) married man," according to The Huffington Post.

The revelation came as Hunter, 42, broke her silence for the first time yesterday to let Edwards off the hook.

She will not pester her ex-lover to take a DNA test to establish once and for all the paternity of her 5-month-old daughter, her lawyer said.

Hunter, 42, does not wish to take a genetic test "now or in the future," attorney Robert Gordon said in a statement.

During an interview Friday in which he copped to the fling, Edwards said the "timing of events" indicate that the child, born on Feb. 27, 2008, could not be his.

"Happy to take a paternity test and would love to see it happen," he said.

But Hunter's stance is that she would prefer to "maintain her privacy and her daughter's privacy," Gordon said.

The mother did not list the father's name on little Frances Quinn Hunter's birth certificate.

Barry Levine, editor of The National Enquirer, which broke the news of the affair, told The Post yesterday: "Up to this hour, I can tell you from our sources, she's believing that eventually she and John Edwards will be together and this will all work out."

Dismissing the paternity issue lets some of the immediate pressure off Edwards - but likely not for long.

If that was what happened, Johnny boy would come clean. It still ended in 2006, and it's only his because the woman is nuts and is holding him hostage with a baby. It would even gain him sympathy. She would be his Glenn Close.

No, I think it's less complex. It's his baby, but he doesn't want that info to come out while his wife is alive. After that, it will come out. He has promised the loon that they will be together after that, but I doubt he means it.

Well, that's quite possible too, of course.

But I'd bet that, stupid as Edwards is, he eventually recognized that his sex-mad hippie f**k-buddy was REALLY nuts, and wanted out. Maybe she arranged for a "one last time for old-times' sake" meeting when she knew she was fertile. Even at 42, such good luck is possible (my daughter was conceived on first try when both my wife and I were 41).

I agree that Occam's Razor favors your theory.

Now here's another thought -- maybe he's been told by the powers at the DNC to leave it alone until after the election, lest it cause trouble... ah, who knows...

What do you want to bet that if the money stops Hunter will suddenly change her mind? It makes me laugh to know that someone as old as this woman is beleives that somehow Edwards will marry her later on, doesn’t she realize that now that this is out in the open that the kid will now always be fatherless?

But... wouldn’t that show up as “income” for the backer? If the “support” is being paid in cash, then you are right — the “go between” wouldn’t have to worry about income/deductions/IRS, etc. But what would John Edwards be writing off that money to? Or as? Cash in a brown paper bag? Can’t be.

I am not laughing at what you’ve posited. CA saw more than a rash of females saving used condoms for exactly those purposes. The message loud and clear, brother to brother, throughout CA in the late 90s was: Don’t just use it; dispose of it immediately.
