The post office is obsolete.

It’s e mail’s fault

Right now the post office gets two thirds of my yearly mailing with Christmas cards. I've switched just about everything else to paying by the phone or the internet. That leaves most of the remaining as tax payments which the bank recommends not sending via electronic payment, presumably because the local, state or federal government would screw it up and you really want a copy of a check when dealing with them.

I finally finished off my $0.39 stamps and am now working through my leftover $0.41 Christmas stamps from last year. I doubt I will get around to buying a $0.42 stamp before they jack up the price again.

People don’t send nearly as many first class letters as they used to. And the post office hasn’t been able to compete very well with companies such as Federal Express for package deliveries.

The post office has to adapt to the changed world. Probably they will adapt by raising postage rates to cover their deficit.

They should merge with UPS. The duplication of efforts by a protected Federal entity is absurd
Merge them and buy out 33% of the employees

When the dimmies nationalize the oil business, mortgage banking, auto manufacturing and healthcare, we’ll really be rolling in profits.

Imagine that. Another inefficient pseudo-governmental agency. And who should be surprised?

Our local post office had 3 windows in 1950, and the current post office here has 3 windows. Our population has increased about 20 fold in all those years, and the postal service has not come anywhere close to keeping up.

I still use the Post Office and stamps to pay my monthly (6 or 8) bills.

How can this possibly be when they’ve got such fast, efficient service and such friendly, helpful, courteous, motivated and caring employees?

I especially like all the friendly, non racist “African hyphen American” employees who always treat me, a “typical white person” so respectfully and cooperatively whenever I have to use the local PO to mail something.

If the PO has one of those self service scales and computers, I’ll always use that rather than having to talk with one of the “postal associates” or “partners”.

How could they lose?
I can email for free. Nobody uses the post office for anything but junk mail anymore.

UPS Ships packages cheaper and better. So does Fedex or TNT or any other company. Letters can be sent via email far more efficiently.

Privatize it or close it down.

They are going to turn a profit by issuing the new Obama commemorative stamp.

It has his resume on it..

Actually, we do have friendly, helpful, courteous, motivated and caring Post Office employees in our (red) county. Maybe being a pubbie enclave with a lot of ex-military is making that difference. Of course, that doesn't necessarily apply nationwide, or even statewide for that matter. But I am very happy for the Postal staff in our county, enough so that I am compelled to make this post. (and no, none of my relatives work for them) :)

Energy costs have to be the big differential here.

You’re right. The Post Office and Buggywhip Company will say, well...we lost money so we’ll just raise rates.....typical govt problem solving.

And who will it hit hardest? Not joking, but the poor —those that don’t have access to computers or internet that would allow them to pay bills and make tons of transactions on-line without the need or use of stamps.
