BEIJING: The Chinese government confirmed Wednesday what journalists arriving at the lavishly outfitted media center here had suspected: Contrary to previous assurances by Olympic and government officials, the Internet would be censored during the upcoming games.
Since the Olympic Village press center opened Friday, reporters have been unable to access scores of Web pages - politically sensitive ones that discuss Tibetan succession, Taiwanese independence, the violent crackdown of the protests in Tiananmen Square and the sites of Amnesty International, Radio Free Asia and several Hong Kong newspapers known for their freewheeling political discourse.
On Wednesday - two weeks after its most recent proclamation of an uncensored Internet during the Summer Games - the International Olympic Committee quietly agreed to some of the limitations, according to Kevan Gosper, chairman of the IOC press commission, Reuters reported.
Gosper said that he regretted the limitations but that "IOC officials negotiated with the Chinese that some sensitive sites would be blocked on the basis they were not considered Games related."

bunch of whores
Think the commie bastards allow Freerepublic?
Just FYI fellas...
There are a number of ChiCom trolls who say that they do, but I seriously doubt it.
If this had happened in the US, there would howling like you have not heard, from both the IOC and the media.
The Chicoms will leave Daily Kos and other DNC/Soros organs alone, but I’d guess FR will be “detuned”.
Sometimes we're accessible and sometimes we're not.
No doubt the Chicoms have "watchers" assigned to check what we have going, and sometimes I think we win them over ~ someday we'll have a Chinese dissenter show up in this country who's going to know about it.
What would the Olympics be if all the journalists reporting the event and the related cultural stories would just leave?
A little censorship is ok according to the IOC? Just who determines what is censored, and how far are free people willing to accomodate the oppressive commies?
I think a tv boycott would be of great value. Send a message to the advertisers that we do not appreciate their support of commie dictators and human rights abuse, enabled by their sponsorship.
Why do I have a feeling that this Olympics is going to be the mother of all disasters..
Can someone please, for cryingoutloud, explain to me why the hell the U.S. is even going to these lousy Chinese-fouled games this year?
More civil rights (well, if they had any in China) have been the subject of violation in the months leading up to this disaster then have ever been in bold view of the world before.
Where are the international civil rights organizations???
Where are the groups who decried Gitmo, and who condemn the U.S. ever chance they get?
China had taken the Olympics as an opportune moment to really crack down on their citizens in numerous ways. Why the hell are we supporting that repression by going?
And besides that... What idiots thought China was a good choice for the Olympics? (I guess the dictators who coincidentally comprise the U.N.’s human rights council...)
(I)nternational (O)pologists for (C)hina
(Yes, I know thank you, and you know who you are ;-) )
>>>Why do I have a feeling that this Olympics is going to be the mother of all disasters..
Because you have common sense, eyes, and can see what is staring all of us in the face.
I for one will not be watching any of this disaster-to-be on tv.
It's worse than that dude...!
Chinas Guerrilla War for the Web
A few FRiends and I hunt out ChiCom trolls on this forum as soemthing of a past time. There have always been a few lurking around. But ever since that big earthquake in March, well over a hundred of them have signed up on FR. They initially provided firsthand details about the quake to garner sympathy and support, but they then slipped into propaganda mode and began spouting off such non-sense like Red China is not all that bad, Tibet is full of Nazis and terrorists, and Falun Gong is a cult.
FR is indeed a BIG target of the massive ChiCom propaganda machine in its drive to try and influence American popular opinion. We need to keep our defenses up and our powder dry!
Well I will not be watching the Olympics until they bring Football as an Olympic event.. I find the whole thing boring anyway..
The same folks who thought Hitler’s Germany was morally equivalent to other Western Nations, are today convinced that China is morally equivalent to today’s Western Nations.
It’s all the same cabal of socialist globalists adrift in a sea of moral relativity.
They honestly don’t see any difference between China and say... the United States. China is a respected player on the world stage. The U.S. is a warmonger nation.
They actually think the U.S. is the problem, not China.
Some of the Falun Gong critics are Sorros agents.
I’m in China now, talking to you on FR. No problem accessing this site since coming here in June.
That’s odd. Considering the complete disdain for China and communism that is often on display here. I hope they try to invade Taiwan so we have reason to decimate their military machine.
