Quote of the Day:

President Bush: The United States is founded upon the belief that every person has unalienable rights and matchless value. Throughout our Nation's history, brave patriots have made great sacrifices to protect this ideal and to advance the cause of freedom around the world. On the 60th anniversary of the integration of the United States Armed Forces, we pay tribute to all our service members and veterans, and we underscore our Nation's commitment to equality …

On this anniversary, we celebrate the legacy of those who refused to allow adversity to diminish their spirit or extinguish their drive to help America live up to its promise of equality for all people. We also commemorate our veterans and service members whose noble and selfless actions have inspired generations of men and women to follow in their footsteps and made our country a more hopeful place.

President George W. Bush speaks with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Admiral Mike Mullen as he leaves the Pentagon after briefings at the Department of Defense in Washington, DC, on July 23, 2008.

“This is another in a series of meetings that the commander in chief conducts with his military advisors every quarter or so,” Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell said during a news conference.

The specifics of the meeting are classified, Morrell said, but he gave reporters a rough outline of the topics covered.

“These meetings provide the president and his military team the opportunity to discuss at length how the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are progressing, what other security threats may be emerging around the world, and how our brave troops and their families are holding up under the strain of repeated and lengthy deployments,” he said.

The national security team undoubtedly would discuss the recently ended surge and what that has meant for Iraq and the region, Morrell said. “Security has improved so much in Iraq over the past year [that] the five additional brigade combat teams have now left the country, and yet violence remains at an all-time low,” he said. A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

The United States is founded upon the belief that every person has unalienable rights and matchless value. Throughout our Nation's history, brave patriots have made great sacrifices to protect this ideal and to advance the cause of freedom around the world. On the 60th anniversary of the integration of the United States Armed Forces, we pay tribute to all our service members and veterans, and we underscore our Nation's commitment to equality.

On July 26, 1948, President Harry Truman signed Executive Order 9981, declaring "that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion or national origin." Today, members of our Armed Forces come from many different backgrounds and cultures and are answering the call to service with bravery, decency, and resolve.

Our Nation has long drawn strength from the diversity of its citizens. Groups such as the Buffalo Soldiers, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the Tuskegee Airmen, and the

"Borinqueneers" risked their lives while proudly wearing the uniform of the United States. By performing their missions with integrity and honor, they highlighted the power of liberty, helped open the door of opportunity, and earned the respect and admiration of a grateful Nation.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim July 26, 2008, as the 60th Anniversary of the Integration of the United States Armed Forces and urge all Americans to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-third day of July, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

GEORGE W. BUSH

Oh my, what a wonderful tagline for now! I think he made lots of mistakes! He will not say for any amount of money that the “surge worked”...he’s crazy! I listened to Rush some yesterday while I was in the car and he played a tape of all Obama’s studdering...ah..ahh..uh..uh..ahh, etc.etc. It was unbelievable!

I love the tag line. He sounds like he has never given a speech before. I was not that bad when I had college speech! Was not great but I did ok for someone who hates to give speeches.

We went out last night to celebrate grandson's bd. We had a good time and it poured down while we were eating. Baby was there and passed around. I told gd that it is no wonder that she never cries since she gets a lot of attention wherever she goes. She did go to sleep for a few minutes and her mom placed her in the car seat and put it under the table!

White House Press Secretary Dana Perino answers questions, Wednesday, July 23, 2008, during her daily briefing at the White House in Washington.

Dana Perino: Hello, everyone. I'll start off with two announcements. As you all know, there's a hurricane brewing in -- off the Gulf, actually hitting land now. The federal government has been working closely with the state of Texas to prepare for the hurricane called Dolly. We've been identifying resources and pre-positioning supplies in case they are needed after the landfall. And FEMA has deployed a couple of teams there and will have more information for you if you need it.

Also today, in an effort to address the root causes of high energy prices, House Republicans are introducing their American Energy Act. Their proposal includes many of the provisions the President called on Congress to act upon, including opening up access to our energy resources in the Outer Continental Shelf, up in ANWR, allowing development of oil shale resources, and streamlining permitting processes for refineries.

Backers of this legislation clearly understand that we need to increase domestic fuel supply with appropriate safeguards for the environment. We hope Democratic leaders will recognize this critical need, and stop standing between the American people and the vast energy resources we have at home. And I would note that the Republicans called for a vote before they leave for their August 10th beginning of their recess.
