The right of African-Americans to vote in the United States is not permanent according to "View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg. On the July 14 edition, Whoopi echoed the popular Internet rumor from a few years ago that voting rights for African-Americans was set to expire in 2007. [audio available here [0]]
"Do you know that we are the only people in the United States who have to have their voting rights okayed every couple of years? Did you know that they have to vote on the Voting Rights Bill for black folks? Can we just, can one of you candidates- can we just take care of that so I dont have to worry every year, my God am I not?"
The shows sole "conservative" Elisabeth Hasselbeck agreed "its ridiculous" and "something needs to be done."
Before spouting such inflammatory charges on national television, Whoopi should check the facts beforehand. Responding to some rumors, the Department of Justice [1] issued a press release clarifying the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Specifically, the 15th amendment to the Constitution prohibits racial discrimination in voting. The voting rights Act of 1965 enforces that Constitutional amendment. Because amendments to the Constitution do not expire, the 15th amendment is permanent.
Additionally, most of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is permanent as well. The few sections with limited time include "special provisions containing extraordinary remedies applied in certain areas of the nation for a limited time."
Such provisions were renewed [2] in 2006, but even if they did expire, according to the Justice Department, "they can be reinstated by court order if there is renewal of discriminatory practices."
So Whoopi should sleep well knowing she will not lose her right to vote and next time should research her facts before scaring a national audience.
Who actually watches this show? I’m curious.
Would have been really, really funny to have Whoopi make that statement when Laura Ingraham was on! At least Laura would have corrected Whoopi and set her straight!
Why do black people require “extraordinary remedies”? This is 2008, not 1964.
You are so right Susie. The lesbian community is so hardcore leftists, you can’t really expect to fit in speaking in rightwing talk. I just hate she has such a rabid personality. I used to think she was so funny, I loved watching that VH1 show she started out on. She was just funny. And I liked her movies too. I even liked her talk show! But she got too out there for me. I think bitterness took her over.
Shame. But you are right, I have some liberal friends and we just don’t talk politics. Other than that, they are nice and I like them!
Yeah, I know. Some of my liberal friends seem so normal and even smart and then when they talk politics they just spout garbage! And there is NO telling them any different. Occasionally, I tell one of them I think she’s really a conservative and just doesn’t know it (is does sometimes say conservative things). It annoys the heck out of her but she loves me anyway!

NONE of you have a constitutional right to vote. There is no such thing.
I disagree.
A bad hairdo, an ugly face, an even uglier black attitude and enough savvy to use white guilt to her benefit aren't talent.
Ask yourself this:
If she was white would she be fawned over to the extent she is?
Would people pay any attention at all to her inane rants?
Would she have achieved the same degree of success?
I think the answer is that we would have never heard of her and she would be working the midnight shift in the scullery of an All-You-Can-Eat joint.
You know what’s funny? I have a friend who is old punk girl, a complete anarchist, but thinks that Democrats are the anarchist-rebel type. And I’m thinking, they are all about communism and taking your individual liberties! How can anarchy and Democrat be hand in hand? I don’t think most of them really understand it all deep down.
It’s hard to say whether or not she would have gotten a start if she hadn’t been black, I don’t know (and frankly, you don’t either). However, if you actually look at some of her work, she is very talented. Her portrayal of the lead character in The Color Purple is amazing. You probably wouldn’t like the movie, it’s rather a chick flick, but it’s quite good.
You can have your own opinion, however, to say she’s not talented because you don’t like her political views seems silly.

I don’t think MOST people understand their own philosophies. They just spout what they’ve heard. They don’t want to admit ignorance, so they just repeat things that seem smart to them.

Voting rights should be taken away from Whoopi, not because she is black but because she is stupid.
Is she really too stupid to know about the 15th Amendment, or does she know her core audience is that stupid and she’s just race baiting for ratings and profit? I’ll take (b) for $1,000, Alex.
“I have friends who are crazy liberals, but we just rarely venture into politics. Iâm sure you do too.”
I don’t. A few acquaintances, but no friends. Why? Because I can’t be friends with someone I don’t respect, and for several years now, I simply have no respect for libdolts.
Well then, you will never have the opportunity to be a good influence on them. However, that’s ok because it’s not everyone’s calling and some people do a poor job of it.

I used to try, to educate, to nudge, to try to bring the light of reason to discussions. But liberalism has become more and more of a cult, immune to reason or fact. I got frustrated and frankly gave up. Now I do what I can to nudge the undecided and strengthen the reasoning, but as for the libs, I just don’t bother anymore. I leave that for thoe more patient and better suited to the task.
LOL see, we all have our gifts! Actually, I particpate in a hobby that is full of liberals for some weird reason (dog shows) and so, unless I decide to give that up, I will be surrounded by them. BUT sometimes I do make my point and they get it. For instance, because we lived in TX for so many years and my husband knows something about the oil business, they listen when we discuss the topic. And, interestingly, we all tend to agree about illegal immigration (something the repubs are missing the boat on in my opinion— MANY of my liberal friends are sick and tired of illegal immigration as they see a direct effect on their lives).

I was talking about Rosie in that post, who are you talking about? Whoopi? Cause that whitey thing doesn’t make sense when talking about Rosie O’Donnell. Although they are both bitter.
