The right of African-Americans to vote in the United States is not permanent according to "View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg. On the July 14 edition, Whoopi echoed the popular Internet rumor from a few years ago that voting rights for African-Americans was set to expire in 2007. [audio available here [0]]
"Do you know that we are the only people in the United States who have to have their voting rights okayed every couple of years? Did you know that they have to vote on the Voting Rights Bill for black folks? Can we just, can one of you candidates- can we just take care of that so I don’t have to worry every year, my God am I not?"
The show’s sole "conservative" Elisabeth Hasselbeck agreed "it’s ridiculous" and "something needs to be done."
Before spouting such inflammatory charges on national television, Whoopi should check the facts beforehand. Responding to some rumors, the Department of Justice [1] issued a press release clarifying the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Specifically, the 15th amendment to the Constitution prohibits racial discrimination in voting. The voting rights Act of 1965 enforces that Constitutional amendment. Because amendments to the Constitution do not expire, the 15th amendment is permanent.
Additionally, most of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is permanent as well. The few sections with limited time include "special provisions containing extraordinary remedies applied in certain areas of the nation for a limited time."
Such provisions were renewed [2] in 2006, but even if they did expire, according to the Justice Department, "they can be reinstated by court order if there is renewal of discriminatory practices."
So Whoopi should sleep well knowing she will not lose her right to vote and next time should research her facts before scaring a national audience.

What is needed is an individual with Hasselbeck's qualities of appearance and demeanor, but with several times her brainpower and streetsmarts.

I actually thought Jumpin’ Jack Flash was very funny. I know I’m in a distinct minority, but her sitting on the floor trying to figure out the lyrics to the song STILL makes me laugh out loud! She is talented, she’s just totally lacking in discernment.
Wait, wait, wait! An actor didn’t know about the Constitution and believed an internet rumor????? Surely you jest!
That is the question. Watching her interviewed for her bio, I don’t think she’s stupid. However, I think her world view makes her believe that government is truly the salvation of the people and of course she has bought into hollywood’s version of truth.
BTW my son made an interesting comment when I asked why so many in hollywood toe that line and he said that he thought it was because people will often even verbally agree with something they don’t believe at all because of the desire to fit in. It made me think of something Whoopie said, that even growing up in school she just never felt like she fit it. So, perhaps this really is mostly about the fact that her activism in behalf of leftist causes makes her fit into her world (the entertainment industry). I think there may be something to that. And of course, the longer you espouse your “beliefs” the more difficult it becomes to change them. Once you’re married to them, divorce is painful and difficult.

I like how she pulled herself out of welfare. That is something to be proud of I guess. Too bad she is staying with the Rosie clan. Although something happened the other day that made for a millisecond like Rosie. Just for a millisecond. Kathy Griffin (yes, roll your eyes) was at an AIDS function and Sharon Stone did this melodramatic speech of reciting “Imagine” by John Lennon and tells about how she was walking down the road and a girl smiled at him (supposedly John Lennon) and he smiled back, and dramatic pause, they went on their way. It was ridiculous and everyone knew it. So Kathy was supposed to give a 20 minute comedy routine and Rosie wanted her to recite (dramatically) Itsy Bitsy Spider and offered to pay $10,000 in her name to the charity and she kept having people come up and offer money too. She was thinking how did these people know? And come to find out, Rosie was going from table to table to try to get enough money to talk Kathy into doing it. She did by the way, except she recited “Hounddog” by Elvis.
For a millisecond, I like Rosie.

Yep. Some people I just have to watch and forget for a while what they think. There are a few I can do that with and tune out their stupidity. Then there are others who are so in your face, you can’t forget the stupidity when they are on screen.
If you think that’s bad, just consider that in a declared state of emergency, the government has the right to kill left-handed people and use their bodies for food. It’s right there in the Constitution!

It’s a very common condition, usually seen in politicians and idiots, excuse me the “mentally challenged”.”
I had a revelation the other day on why the Hollywood is so left leaning. Heck, some are left sideways. But anyway, they are filthy rich. Like as rich as say, George W. Bush. I also got to thinking, why is it ok for Susan Surandon to be rich, but if the Bush’s are rich, it’s a bad thing? And they mask their wealth by caring about the poor guy. No, they don’t actually do anything about it, maybe attend a charity with some cavier and champagne and feel good about doing something about it. Or have a charity as an excuse to have a party, but not really give any of their money to the ‘disadvantaged’. So by speaking out about all the other bad rich people, they deflect how much money they have.
Just a thought.

Don’t confuse her with facts, she FEELS that her right to vote is less secure than a white womans. That’s what this is about.
And as long as she FEELS that she is an oppressed minority, that’s the only “FACT” that matters.
Everything else is a white mans lie meant to distract from the emotional effect of her hysterical pronouncements.

You know, all of these people have some good things about them. I suspect if we knew some of them in person we might roll our eyes at what they say, but we might like them anyway. I have friends who are crazy liberals, but we just rarely venture into politics.
I’m sure you do too. Rosie is just a very screwed up person, from everything I have read or heard about her. And I think she too just wants to fit in. Imagine how you might be if you were always surrounded by wacko liberals and that was your peer group and you weren’t as smart as you are.
