Whoopi Goldberg Airs False Claims about Voting Rights Act

The right of African-Americans to vote in the United States is not permanent according to "View" co-host Whoopi Goldberg. On the July 14 edition, Whoopi echoed the popular Internet rumor from a few years ago that voting rights for African-Americans was set to expire in 2007. [audio available here [0]]

"Do you know that we are the only people in the United States who have to have their voting rights okayed every couple of years? Did you know that they have to vote on the Voting Rights Bill for black folks? Can we just, can one of you candidates- can we just take care of that so I don’t have to worry every year, my God am I not?"

The show’s sole "conservative" Elisabeth Hasselbeck agreed "it’s ridiculous" and "something needs to be done."

Before spouting such inflammatory charges on national television, Whoopi should check the facts beforehand. Responding to some rumors, the Department of Justice [1] issued a press release clarifying the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Specifically, the 15th amendment to the Constitution prohibits racial discrimination in voting. The voting rights Act of 1965 enforces that Constitutional amendment. Because amendments to the Constitution do not expire, the 15th amendment is permanent.

Additionally, most of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 is permanent as well. The few sections with limited time include "special provisions containing extraordinary remedies applied in certain areas of the nation for a limited time."

Such provisions were renewed [2] in 2006, but even if they did expire, according to the Justice Department, "they can be reinstated by court order if there is renewal of discriminatory practices."

So Whoopi should sleep well knowing she will not lose her right to vote and next time should research her facts before scaring a national audience.

It’s on the net so it must be true! Or I get those emails every day that have already been passed around about a million times, so how can the facts in them not be true? Har har.

Even when they say disparaging things about Obama, Pelosi, etc, I am skeptical.

“I expect a lot more of this sort of lie / Internet meme to spread over the next few months.”

Before the 2000 election, I worked on a HUD renovation project. Some of these poor, black people believed Bush would bring back slavery if elected. Amazing what some people will believe.

It's been back for ages.

We already have a class of people who work for a priviledged class who do not work. It's not voluntary, so it's slavery.

But, but, how can this be? Whoopi is WRONG??? No!

After all, she holds an honorary degree from Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa. They don’t give out degrees for nothing, you know.

It was this POS that went on this same television show in her current role and made a sexually suggestive remark to the current Speaker of the House.

Michelle Malkin carried the clip on her website, although I’m unable to find it now.

Perhaps people should lose their right to vote when they perpetrate stupid rumors on national TV.

I did too.

It was the only place she could not play the poor victim.

Sadly, you are probably right. She’s pretty, and that’s enough for hollywood.

"Hasselbeck is as mindless as the rest of them."

She's not the best Conservative standard bearer. She should be replaced by Ann Coulter.

I watched her bio on Biography Channel the other day, and I had forgotten how much I did like some of her movies and she IS funny when she’s not spewing filthy language. She has an amazing story, I have to admit she had a bulldogged determination to do what she had a passion for. But, now she has reminded me, again, why I won’t watch anything she does now. I don’t think she’s stupid, so that leaves me to believe that facts aren’t that important to her.

I pine for the days when stupid people didn’t even pay attention to politics. Now it’s national entertainment, to the detriment of all, I think.

Only the coffee clatch morons get their politics from The View. Sadly, this is half of the stay at home mom population. And they blast their husbands with it when they get home from work.

I sometimes wonder, does she honestly, deep in her heart and mind believe c**p like this is true, or is she fully aware she is telling a bold-face lie.

I like her in The Color Purple, but that’s about it as far as liking Whoopi.
