A food whose name, undoubtedly, came from the sound that the first person who ate one made.
Right before he heaved his guts out!
baaaa...aaa..lut!!!
Not a first date type food!!
I could still do without the balut, though. :-)
And I never understood those chicken-claws-on-a-stick that were sold on Magsaysay Blvd. What, exactly, is being eaten there??
I love the Filipino sense of humor.
Actually they’re usually pretty tasteless, especially if they’re cold. If you’re at the office you can fill a cup with hot water and let the egg soak a bit before removing the shell for a quick snack.
Seeing the Jolibee icon gave me chills. That scary bee! Something’s not quite right with that bee. Actually, Jolibee does have a pretty good hot mango pie — kind of like the American fast food hot apple pie. As for the burgers: well, it’s better to stick with chicken, pork, and fish in the Philippines.
But, I went there for the experience.
I just checked their web site, and one of their new products is a tuna pie.
I know good beef is harder to come by in the Philippines, so Jollibee is somewhat excused. Yeah, I’ll pass on the tuna pie! You’re right that the experience is worth it even with the anthropomorphic bee leering at you.
Burgers and Jollibee aside, I discovered that a McDonalds McChicken sandwich is almost the same in Manila or even Hong Kong as in the US.
