Now when McCain criticizes Gramm for his comment, you slam McCain.

As far as I can tell, there is no recession at the national level, though some regions (Michigan may be one example) are living through regional recessions while other areas (like Virginia) are doing just fine. However, Mr. Gramm's choice of words ("a nation of whiners") was just plain asinine and uncouth. (It came across to me as "shut up and drink the Kool-Aid!") As for Mr. McCain, his stupidity is reflected in the bizarre comeback he came up with (exile in Belarus).

Perhaps I should clarified further. Either way, this political drama is better than watching soap operas.

Like it or not. That is the way it is. And those who perceive that their financial situation is bad in November (about the time the first massive winter heating bills have arrived) will vote for change, not for the status quo.

The economy doesn’t suck. Here in Tucson, unemployment has just edged up to 4%. Housing prices are about what they were 3 years ago. You can rent an 800 sq ft apartment for $650. Gas is going up - no shock there, since we’ve restricted production for 30 years. Taxes do not need to increase - try voting republican, if you can find a real one.

Oil prices closed at $141/barrel today.

That may result in $5+ per gallon gasoline by November, assuming the drastic oil price increases ease.

If the oil prices continue to rise at $10 or so per week, oil prices could be well over $200 a barrel by November.

That could translate to gas prices far greater than $5/gallon.

Amen! My prayer, literally, is that something nothing short of a miracle will happen between now and then to spare me from having to choose, McCain, Obama, third-party or stay home. I honestly feel like I've never had less choice in a presidential election in my lifetime.

I have the utmost respect for John McCain as a man, especially his service to our nation, but IMHO, he is simply not presidential material. Remove the respect part and the same goes double for Obama.

Actually McCain was right to blast Phil Gramm...but of course silly to let him get near the campaign in the first place.

See his wife Wendy Gramm's response when she got flack for serving on the board of IBP, a meatpacker charged with violating immigration and safety laws: "Wages of labor, like other prices, are set in a market."

True enough, but if you do all you can to bring in people willing to work for next to nothing, you can get around a lot of laws.

When that IBP story broke I lost all respect for the Gramms, and they haven't done anything to win it back.

Finding out that she also worked with Enron certainly didn't earn them any points.

He does not deserve this lambasting from McCain. McCain does not need to demonstrate his empathy for those in difficult times by trashing a good man like Phil Gramm.

I supported Phil Gramm in 1996 for President, but have no sympathy for him now. He is a conservative who supported McCain for President over Fred Thompson and other conservatives. The only argument for this could be that it was for McCain's character, or his judgment, or because he thought McCain was a winner. Well it was McCain's judgment that to be a winner he needed to throw Gramm under the bus. Justice is served.
