NONPROFIT MALFEASANCE [ACORN fraud Obama]

NONPROFIT MALFEASANCE [NYTimes]:

Two prominent national nonprofit groups are reeling from public disclosures that large sums of money were misappropriated in unrelated incidents by an employee and a former employee.

The groups, Acorn, one of the country’s largest community organizing groups, and the Points of Light Institute, which works to encourage civic activism and volunteering, have dealt with the problems in very different ways.

Acorn chose to treat the embezzlement of nearly $1 million eight years ago as an internal matter and did not even notify its board. After Points of Light noticed financial irregularities in early June, it took less than a month for management to alert federal prosecutors, although group officials say they have no clear idea yet what the financial impact may be.

Acorn's behavior doesn't surprise me -- they seem a bit shifty in general -- but the entire nonprofit sector is suffering from deeply inadequate scrutiny despite being awash in money. The spin from Acorn's President doesn't suggest that they've learned any useful lessons.

UPDATE: Reader John Richardson emails:

What I found most interesting is that the article made no mention of the numerous ties that Sen. Obama has and has had to ACORN which I agree is a shifty, and I would go further and say sleazy, organization. A simple Google search using "ACORN" and "Obama" pulls up 516,000 hits.

Imagine if it was the relief organization CARE and someone had embezzled from them. The reporter from the NY Times would have found someway to mention that Cynthia Hensley McCain aka Cindy McCain was a board member and not doing her job of oversight.

No doubt.

Barack Obama served on the board of directors of Woods Fund of Chicago from 1993 to 2001. During that time, the tax exempt foundation made some interesting grants, including one to Obama's church, Trinity United Church of Christ, headed by Rev. Jeremiah Wright at the time. Grants were also made to ACORN, a left wing voter registration group and to a partnership for constructing low income housing. The fund also used Northern Trust for financial services, which is the same company that provided Obama his 2005 mortgage.

In 2001 the board of directors included Obama, William Ayers, the former Weather Underground radical terrorist, and serving as chairman was Howard J. Stanback who headed New Kenwood LLC, a limited liability company founded by now-convicted felon Tony Rezko and Allison Davis, Obama's former boss at the law firm of Davis Miner Barnhill & Galland. “remember that big blow up between acorn and the police in the 1970’s in philly?”

I thought Acorn was a relatively new organization, circa 2000. Apparently that’s not true. Any info on history of the organization? How many Republican campaigns have they helped? Nyuk, Nyuk.

The nutcase Philly group was “MOVE” (rather like Obambi’s “CHANGE” theme as well as “MoveOn”). They had a shootout with Philly police in 1978 and then the really huge disaster when the police dropped a bomb on a house of MOVE freaks because they had been wrecking the neighborhood and would not come out:

ACORN has been around since the 70s I believe..... I know I had heard of them by around 1981 b/c one of the nutty leftists in my college class was going to work for them after graduation. Knowing him slightly, I assumed that they were pretty radical and off-the-wall loons.

Hey Uncle Ralph! I just love to see postings about ACORN and OBAMA because I've watch ACORN's militant machinations for over a decade now.

Pulling the covers of this group helps pull the covers from one of their biggest "organizers" who is now trying to make a serious run at the Presidency of the most righteous and God blessed nation in the history of the planet!!!

I say about them what "Rev" Wright said about American in heated, vile, vulgar hatred!!!

Guilt by association? YOU BET!!!

That was not acorn. It was a group called “MOVE” I think.
The daughter of the leader still lives a couple blocks away and you see her walking along looking all freaky!
