"Black national anthem" causes stir at Hick[Denver rayor] speech
The Denver Post ^ | 7-1-2008 | By Christopher N. Osher

As Denver dignitaries gathered today for Mayor John Hickenlooper's State of the City address, City Council President Michael Hancock introduced singer Rene Marie to perform the national anthem.

But that's not what she did.

Instead, Marie performed the song "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," which also is known as the "black national anthem."

When she finished, the proceedings moved forward, and the "Star-Spangled Banner" was never performed.

I twas fun listening to the Mayor tap dance on the radio. His 'deer in the headlights' impression was spot on. I am looking forward to his statment tommorow clarifying, his earlier clarification of his 2nd explanation.

Lift every voice and sing
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us,
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun
Let us march on till victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears have been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
Till now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, Our God, where we met Thee;
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand.
True to our GOD,
True to our native land James Weldon Johnson June 17, 1871 - June 26, 1938

All it would have taken was one person in the audience to stand up and say … what are you singing? Oh, to have been in that crowd, jail would have been my next destination. ;-)

You know, I thought for a while that we were getting over our racial issues as a nation. As a caucasian, I don’t care what color another person is. I address them as fellow human beings on an equal plain. This election has shown in living color (no pun intended) that racial harmony will never be possible because some folks love the attention that controversy brings more than they do peace among the races.

Oh beautiful for Whitey's wallet from whence the welfare comes.
With reparations on the way, soon as Obama’s in.

Black racism is rampant. Anybody who thinks otherwise is dumb as a box of rocks. Any white who would of sung a song with race connotations to it in place of the National Anthem would have been immediately fired. The mayor would be falling all over himself in apology, self loathing and taking a supine position. It would be worse then the whole Don Imus fiasco by an order of magnitude.

I’ve been to many black events where this song was sung. I’ve never heard it in the presence of white people. I’m surprised this occurred and am not quite sure what the point was supposed to be - once Obama becomes president we all start singing ‘Lift Every Voice’ instead of the National Anthem?

The Mayor could have salvaged the situation simply by saying, "Thank you, Miss Marie. Now would the audience please stand and join me in singing our National Anthem--the Star Spangled Banner." And then started singing it.

The last line: True to our native land

from the obamama's Trinity Church's Statement of Faith :

"We are an African people, and remain "true to our native land," the mother continent,..."

Wake up, Sheeple.

The Black Liberationists have been lying in wait and building steam for decades.

This brazen act was deliberate - a shot across the bow.

Reparations and Black Power in the goal...
