NEW YORK - Video from a surveillance camera at a Brooklyn hospital shows a woman dying on the floor of a psychiatric emergency room while people nearby ignore her.

The video was released Monday by lawyers suing Kings County Hospital alleging neglect and abuse of mental health patients at the facility.

The video shows the 49-year-old woman keeling over and falling out of her chair on June 19 and lying facedown on the floor, then thrashing before going still. About an hour passed before someone realized what was happening and tried to help.

Today, racist is “a shut up, I don’t want to hear what you have to say” technique. The true meaning...well everyone is a racist in one way or another IMO.

I’ve never seen anyone sleeping on an ER hospital floor, not saying it doesn’t happen. But, I’ve never witnessed it.

I watched the video and it appears the poor woman fell asleep or passed out before she hit the floor. I can't make it out, but she MAY have hit her head on the furniture in the corner and suffered a concussion. But an honest autopsy should determine what she actually died from.

Mentally ill, crazy, poor, black or white..what happened to this woman was totally unacceptable. We should be outraged.

Welcome to socialized medicine.

I too know many with mental illness who are extremely high functioning people who occupy very important positions. Properly treated all sorts of mental illnesses from severe clinical depression to worse won’t do anything to stand in the way of a smart person.

You're the one boiling over with hatred.

I may not be "boiling over," but I do hate stupidity with a passion. It does not matter what color the ignorant person happens to be. And I really dislike those so blinded by their stupidity that they can't even see what is in front of their face.

There it is. I'm not comfortable around blindingly stupid people. So sue me.

I agree with you. Everyone is a racist to some extent or another. But there are some people who try to be color blind and others who are simply blind.

the root of the problem is that the govt does not pay for the care that they demand doctors and hospitals give....

infact, the govt just this week decided to continue to NOT pay what they owe to hospitals....

the govt routinely pays in only about 1/2 of what it actually costs to take care of Medicare and Medicaid hospitals.....

and do we really expect these places to be well run, efficient, caring?????.....

"They just don’t want to pay to warehouse them is all. I don’t see that it is humane to let a sick person live on the street."

no....it was not the cost....some unrealistic academics actually believe that it was being "nicer" to these people to kick them out of warm, three meals a day institutions and into the cold, hard streets, where many of them just lanquished...

all laws should be written by actual people that know the score....not intellectuals that never get their hands dirty...

Vomiting on the desk when the receptionist appears less-than-convinced of your need for care works, too. Aim for the computer keyboard if they can’t tear themselves away from it.

"She asked the hospital to at least provide her with a security guard to escort her to her car when she was leaving the hospital after dark, but the hospital simply refused."

that doesn't make any sense. That seems to easy to do. What did she do?

She didn’t have any options but to keep working there and hope for the best. Like any medical resident in the US who didn’t have wealthy parents to pay for school, she had a couple hundred thousand in student loan debt, and the government prevents anyone from using that education to make a living unless they first put in 4 years of slave labor as a resident, and the only way for US medical school graduates to get into a residency program is through the national match system. The match system tells the young doctor where s/he will do the residency, and there is no enforcement of work hour regulations even when state law requires it, or of work conditions, and the resident gets paid about what a receptionist with a high school diploma makes for working half as many hours. This is what it takes to support a medical care system where criminals and scammers and lazy bums and drunks and druggies and illegal aliens are all “entitled” to free medical care. Of course, since it’s a “free” country, she obviously had the option of quitting, and trying to find some other way to earn a living besides practicing medicine, that would enable her to support herself and pay off her huge loans.

Another little known fact (to outsiders) is that the emergency room at Kings County is usually swamped with illegal immigrants who never pay a cent for their medical care.

That's the case with most major city ERs now.

That is sad.

what do you think or she think is the best way to deal with this issue that you are talking about.
