Bakken shale in North Dakota and Canada. It is high grade crude with 5 to 12 billion barrels immediately recoverable and 500 billion ultimately recoverable. There is apparently oil in similar amounts under the Arctic Ocean which the polar bear listing will keep America from exploiting. Each one of those bears, whose population has been steadily increasing for some years, is going to cost our economy billions of dollars. google bakken

Bakken is shale but not the Utah sort of shale which is not really petroleum but can be refined to a lot of the same products. Bakken is "light sweet" but locked up in shale. It is not the heavy oil of the tar sands.
