DEMOCRAT Barack Obama admitted he was wrong to say his uncle helped liberate the Nazis' Auschwitz concentration camp after Republicans said Soviet troops freed the camp.
Senator Obama's campaign said the candidate meant to say that his great-uncle, Charlie Payne, had helped liberate a part of the Buchenwald camp, not Auschwitz.
"Yesterday he mistakenly referred to Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald in telling of his personal experience of a soldier in his family who served heroically," said campaign spokesman Bill Burton.
Mr Burton said in the statement that Obama's great uncle served in the 89th Infantry Division that entered Germany in 1945 and on April 4 overran Ohrdruf, a subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp.
Senator Obama had made the Auschwitz reference in a Memorial Day speech on Monday.
More than 1 million people, most of them Jews, were killed at Auschwitz, an extermination camp in Poland. Buchenwald in Germany was mainly a forced labor camp, where some 56,000 people are believed to have died.
"I had an uncle who was ... part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps," Senator Obama said.

Was his great uncle really in the Army?
A poster here: http://boards.historychannel.com/thread.jspa?threadID=510002550 says the great uncle was in the Navy, but doesn’t explain how he found the name of the great uncle and how he got the military info on him. not sure he is right. Also, if there is more than one great uncle, that could explain the problem of how a Navy guy was at the liberation of the camp. it was the other uncle or maybe the uncle’s cousin?
This is acute since Obama blithely ignores the liberation of millions of Iraqis and Afghans by the men and women of the U. S. Armed Forces and those of allied nations - except to obliquely condemn it and attempt to reverse all that has been accomplished by great sacrifice.
The barbarity and slaughter of the Islamic terrorists/fanatics even surpass those of the Third Reich, as hard as this is to first conceptualize - something obviously beyond Obama’s and Michelle's world of “I, me, and my.”
Finally, we are reminded again, through this episode, of Rev. Wright's rabid condemning, slandering, and cursing America for all that it is and has been (including being a liberator of African-Americans.)
"I had an uncle who was ... part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps," Senator Obama said.
Unlike Barry, I really did have an uncle who Liberated a concentration camp. In fact he was part of the first American unit to liberate the first camp we found - Ohrdruf. And the unit was the 4th Armored Division, part of George S Patton's, 3rd US Army. (Ohrdruf was so sickening, Patton could not go in at first)
And this was after the 4th Armored had relieved (saved their butts really), the 101st Airborne Division at the place called Bastogne, in that thingy called the Battle of the Bulge.
And that uncle of mine was Tank Commander, Sgt., Michael L. O'Connor who raised my like a father after mine (that drunken pos) left us when I was five.
So Barry, piss off on the war stories, okay.
Btw, the History Channel Bloggers are doing some digging. It seems that the person Barry named enlisted in the US Navy a good month or so after Dec 7th.
His white mother’s grandfather’s brother.
Shhhhshhh!!!!
Obama said we aren’t doing well in Afghanistan because we need translators there and all of our arabic translators are busy in Iraq. Even though they don’t SPEAK arabic in Afghanistan...

:’) There are people out there who think the US entered WWI because of the sinking of the Lusitania, despite the fact that the Lusitania was sunk in 1915, Wilson ran for reelection on the slogan “he kept us out of war” while preparing to send troops, and the US didn’t join until 1917. Wilson asked Congress to declare war nearly two years after the sinking. :’)
Worse than Obama’s gaffe (which is really just some lie he’s been telling for years, but finally got called out on it, then tried the old soft shoe to get out of it) was O’Reilly’s claim that US troops massacred German troops at Malmedy. O’Reilly should have been forced out of the so-called profession of journalism after that one.
