DEMOCRAT Barack Obama admitted he was wrong to say his uncle helped liberate the Nazis' Auschwitz concentration camp after Republicans said Soviet troops freed the camp.
Senator Obama's campaign said the candidate meant to say that his great-uncle, Charlie Payne, had helped liberate a part of the Buchenwald camp, not Auschwitz.
"Yesterday he mistakenly referred to Auschwitz instead of Buchenwald in telling of his personal experience of a soldier in his family who served heroically," said campaign spokesman Bill Burton.
Mr Burton said in the statement that Obama's great uncle served in the 89th Infantry Division that entered Germany in 1945 and on April 4 overran Ohrdruf, a subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp.
Senator Obama had made the Auschwitz reference in a Memorial Day speech on Monday.
More than 1 million people, most of them Jews, were killed at Auschwitz, an extermination camp in Poland. Buchenwald in Germany was mainly a forced labor camp, where some 56,000 people are believed to have died.
"I had an uncle who was ... part of the first American troops to go into Auschwitz and liberate the concentration camps," Senator Obama said.

And this was not some off-the-cuff answer to a question but a prepared speech.
Re seeing dead people.
Richard Carlson (an American actor) - “They walk around, lifeless, no expressions on their faces, without a soul”.
Bob Hope (an American comedian/actor) - “Oh, you mean Democrats”.
And this was from a movie made in the late 1940’s or early 1950’s. Nothing has changed.
A salute to your troops in Afghanistan. They are kicking Taliban ass big time.
Get ready for the liberal push-back, here it comes! Now the correct stance is not that anyone should criticize Obambi for exploiting the Holocaust in order to promote his current stance on GI benefits, or that anyone can say Obambi is clueless about WWII history, the Holocaust, and his own family (the “typical white person” side of it)..... no, now the counter-attack is that eviiillll Republicans are the ones politicizing this and “using the Holocaust and concentration camps as a political football” — yep, you read it here folks, it’s all our fault for noticing that O-Gaffe is a walking, talking joke of a candidate:
“Obama campaign aides were indignant that Republicans had pounced on what they called an innocent mistake over such a grave subject. Tommy Vietor, an Obama spokesman, decried “using the Holocaust and concentration camps as a political football.””

You’re right, that’s a typical response. Yet if a Republican had made such a gaffe, you’d be hearing how unbelievably crass it is that a Republican doesn’t even know one concentration camp from another. You can imagine the media stories: For those who survived the camps, the memories of death and desolation will never disappear. Yet to one candidate, the camps are indistinguishable, merely names not even worth the effort of accurate memory....
There is nothing innocent about Obama Bin Lying.
Everyday he proves he unfit to be President.
oh, yes, any Republican who botched this would never ever hear the end of it........ if we can extrapolate from the MSM meltdown over Dan Quayle adding an ‘e’ to ‘potato’ then just imagine the volcanic coverage if he had said something like this!!
The double-standards never go away.

Ooooooo, now osama hussein is white again. That fence he’s sitting should be broken by now.
ROFL!
When I said my uncle was a Green Beret, I really meant that he used to watch The Green Hornet.
Absolutely plausible and deniable as well. Jack Murtha should be such an ironman.
We're using the Holocaust as a football? It's B. Hussein, boasting of his grandfather/uncle/whoever liberating a death camp, while his "spiritual guide" and mentor Jeremiah Wright gives awards and praise to Holocaust skeptic (to put it mildly) and notorious anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan, who is the one making a trivial political plaything out of the Holocaust.
Uncle Joe is every democrat's uncle.

...oops, and thanks for the pings!
About three years ago in Delphiforums.com, I got hard on one lady’s case for insisting that World War II ended in 1947. However, it sounds like Obama’s mistake is worse.
“On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes — and I see many of them in the audience here today — our sense of patriotism is particularly strong”.
The dimbulb is right here - from what I hear, dead people make quite the patriots.
