Vanity: prayers requested (about to be unemployed)
Vanity ^ | May 20 2008 | Uzumaki Naruto

Hello Freepers:

I am about to be laid off from work. I had an interview last week but it went to an insider. More job applications are in the works. Hopefully something comes up.

Could you guys say a few prayers for me? Thank you so much!!

Craigslist is a great place to find job openings.

Openings in general, for that matter.

Yes, I will pray for you because I've been in the same situation.

Please provide whatever details you can for a public forum - for example the profession involved and your location.

Been there, done that, didn’t like it. It used to be when you were ‘laid off’ there was a chance you could get re-hired. No more.
Good luck with your search. Polish your CV and cover letter and consider getting a job with your state or the feds.

"I’m the healthcare recruiter here" Interesting. Do you also work with healthcare IT professionals?

I’ll keep you and your family in my prayers. Monster.com is a great site for searching as is careerbuilder.com. You’ll get through this. Save all your jobhunting receipts and expenses such as gas, clothing or supplies you had to buy in order to jobhunt. They are tax-deductible.

Dude, that's Milton! From Office Space, one of the last excellent movies made in Hollywood. That's where the red stapler joke comes from.

Prayers from Michigan.

If you are in the States, you might want to post a little about your situation on your FR state webpage. If you need to know how to access that, just ask. The state pages can be tremendously helpful for this kind of thing.

“Office Space” is a classic for the modern age. Mike Judge did himself proud with that one. Wish I could say the same for some of his other efforts.

Ditto to the other comments, where are you from and what is your background? A lot of folks may have connections and be able to help. I know there are many jobs in my company I hear people complaining they have a hard time filling because they can’t find qualified people.

Thanks for the good wishes from my fellow Freepers. Well, I am in the environmental sciences. I live in the southwest. I work for the academia and it was quasi-stable for a while. The problem is that we are reliant on gov't funding, and the gov't is broke. I wish I were exposed to the ideas of conservatism, such as self-reliance, in my younger days. I probably would have picked a different path. Relying on the gov't leads to weakness and slavery. Even alot of the so-called private sector jobs rely on gov't contracts.

Having a Pile-High-and-Deeper is a burden getting into the private sector. I think I'll eventually find something but I may have to take a pay cut or totally switch field (which means wasted over a decade of my life). But, one must do what one must to survive.

Keep the faith.
I’m also busy praying for my former boss whose contract wasn’t renewed
this year...even though to all appearances she did very well at her
management job for the last three years.

Some hiring/layoff decisions seem to be capricious.

I may be hard to see it right now but getting laid off might be the best thing that happens to you in your lifetime.

Most people I know who have been laid off have gone on to find new opportunities that were more exciting and rewarding than the earlier one. Much more. Keep remembering that.

Six months from now you’ll find out and you’ll come back to tell us how happy you are and how you’re making much more money!
