Thanks for response. I agree with you - people do all kinds of things to change their appearance. More power to them.

It just struck me as possibly at odds with Obama’s strongly stated disgust (in his first book) with various attempts by black people to “look white.”

Again, race is never a topic I am particularly at ease with. And i listened to the book while commuting, trying to get an idea of who Obama was - or at least who he believes he is.
