But Hawaii and Guam provide valuable forward projection of vessels, men and materiel.
Hainan Island is right next to the Chinese mainland, too close to make much difference in pre-positioning of assets, yet too far for a bridge or tunnel.

Great sat photo. I had fun at the site in link #18 snooping around the island. Amazing tools right at our fingertips.
