My Life in a Polygamist Compound
Slate ^ | 04/16/08 | Torie Bosch

Posted on 04/18/2008 8:38:05 AM PDT by DFG

When Texas authorities seized 416 children in a raid on a compound of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Americans quickly learned that the religious group encourages polygamy and the marriage of young girls to older men. Escape, a memoir published last fall, offers a more detailed portrait of life with the FLDS. In the book, Carolyn Jessop, a sixth-generation polygamist describes her life as the fourth wife of Merril Jessop, who ran the recently raided Texas compound. Carolyn left Merril in 2003, before he moved to Texas, but her memoir sheds light on the man and on the beliefs and practices common within the insular community. Below, Slate flags Carolyn's most intriguing, strange, and heartbreaking allegations.

I would love your help in making my posts neater on this statistic stuff.

Ha! My graduate level statistics skills are still buried in brain, along with my undergrad Thermodynamics skills somewhere back in 1983.

I'll look for them while I ask Martha Quinn and JJ Jackson to play me a tune on MTV.

Just kidding pal. Whatever I can do, I will do. Send me stuff.

Sometimes people just don’t think through what they’re purporting.

The WBC cult is getting away with what it is by the abuse of the First Amendment.

I can’t help but think that the Founding Fathers would be horrified what’s been going on lately.

Gotta go. It’s a beautiful day and there’s a yard and garden demanding attention.

She did NOT claim to be two weeks pregnant. She said “several”.

And remember, she had been to the hospital...

Medical personnal usually speak in “weeks”...

Mothers will usually say “months”

I’m sure they examined her for the pregnancy..

I havent seen an article where she was only 2 weeks,,,

I thought she was about four months or so...

I’m sure OMM is talking about his most recent posts. The past few posts from him have been disgusting and worthy of a life time ban in my opinion. What he has posted is far worst than anything Elsie has ever said.

I have questioned this for weeks. OMM and resty were/are allowed liberties with the posting rules that no other posters are. I have even brought this up with mods, and they refuse to answer.

One would speculate that they have FRiends in high places, perhaps "spiritual" friends.

I'll ask the question.

Why wasn't Old Mountain Man banned?

By the way, this centuries old song is great.

"Geesh

You are one scary dude.

A sick, vile man makes a determination about the children of OTHER men, and you defend that?"

It's always interesting to watch those who share the moderator's beliefs get away with far more personal attacks that those who do not.

Doesn't matter. I broke into these virtual reality forums on t.o. and this doesn't hold a candle to those guys. :-)

If they didn’t ban you, they never should ban anyone. I hope Elsie is gone for good!

I'm a woman, and I would be VERY scared to live in a world controlled by men like you.

Just a fact.

Just a reminder of why I am scared of men like you:

Quote from book:

"Page 404: Jessop heard "rumors that children were being taken from their mothers and sent to the FLDS compound in Texas. … We heard they were being sent away to be raised the way Warren wanted them to be raised."

Your defense:

This is the ultimate sin to modern society and must be destroyed at all costs. A patriarchial model where the husband/male leader sets the rules. To reach this goal, politically-unpopular male-led societies must be shown to be criminal and 'mean'.

No, thanks. Where men set ALL the rules, women have no rights. I'd rather not be ruled by the likes of the FLDS henchmen and "prophet."

Unlike you, I hope both restornu and Elsie are welcomed back.

As to your charge, I didn't warrant banning for the Thought Crimes of not agreeing with Joseph Smith, Secret Temple Practices, and the Golden Plates.

You, however, deserve a second look (and I am sure you are getting it). I realize this is difficult for a Temple Worthy Man Who is Becoming A God to listen to, but bear with us.

If you wish to leave me another nasty smelling Freep Mail, please do so.

Was it you that filed the phony complaint against the sect in Texas? I notice that you are in the rah rah section that has convicted an entire group of people without any evidence other than your own twisted opinions. Your hatred has twisted your mind. I would urge you to get help.

Do you mean like the one you left me saying that unless I produce evidence to support something that I didn't say that you would call me out for not telling the truth?

I agree with you. I have a friend that lives on the AZ/Utah border and personally knows many people that have been or are part of the polymagy sects. I talked to him on the phone last night and he explained to me that there are several seperate groups that practice polymagy. He told me that some of the groups do not believe in having underage girls for wives, and many of them split with Jeffs’ father over that issue. He also told me that many of the men in polygamy groups do work very hard and he works with some of them in a mine up there. The welfare fraud is another thing that all the different groups don’t practice. My friend said Jeffs was a nutcase of the worst kind and his followers are just as bad and they likely are doing just what has been reported.

Now that I understand that there are different groups of polymagists with different beliefs, I can understand why some seem to be supportive of this group, maybe not understanding the differences. I don’t have an issue with polygamy- it is sure not for me!! I understand polygamy is illegal and authorities have the right to attempt to prosecute it, but it’s hard to prove and if there are no other issues then rarely do they get into trouble.

I cannot for any reason condone the abuse, expecially sexual abuse of any child and I do hope Texas has their ducks in a row to prosecute any man that has sexually abused the girls, or any adult that hes helped in the sexual abuse of the girls or boys for that matter.

I still have some questions about how the authorities handled this- but that may clear up as more info. comes out. I hope the authorities have crossed all the t’s and dotted all the i’s because they won’t be able to help the children if their actions don’t hold water.

I am so glad you reminded me.

The Admin Moderator didn't send you a mail saying you could not debate any further last night - did he?

I asked you in a response to the Freepmail you sent to me a copy of the Admin Mods mail (if there was one) as proof that you were warned to not debate anymore, and you never responded. Hence, you ran away.

All the Admin Mod said on the forum was to knock off your attacks.

I never published that mail of yours. It wasn't necessary, nor did you leave vile spew like Old Mountain Man does.

Did I call you a Drunk, a Liar, or a Coward in any Freepmail? No. That is what he does.

So.......you were dishonest with all of us last night. You didn't want to answer the questions posed about Christ's teachings. I'll try again for the third time with you.

Here ya go!

____________________________________________________________________

"But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart."

Matthew 5:28

The Mormons claim to be followers of Christ, yes?

Or did the "prophet" Joseph Smith "restore" what Christ said?

All of the women in this picture were "wives" to this FLDS man. All of them were sexually active with him and produced children.

So, did he violate Christ's teaching, or not?
