Smoking one extra-long, menthol cigarette after another, James Willie Myart Jr. stood frying a mound of bacon in his lavishly appointed East Side kitchen.
It was 4 a.m., and the civil rights attorney had been firing off antagonistic e-mails to city and county officials since midnight, making accusations of racism and corruption in between allusions to George Orwell and Alexis de Tocqueville.
At more than 300 hulking pounds and with diabetes and heart disease to match, Myart was in the midst of a loosely applied medical leave he began earlier this month, which he was using as an excuse to stay out of court...
