I was delighted to see that the Communist Party lost ALL their seats in the parliament. If you recall the post-war years up to about 1980 or so, that is no small accomplishment. There were times when I thought Italy was in danger of becoming an actual Communist-bloc nation.
And their newspaper is Il Manifesto, whose journalist Giulia Sgrena was abducted and then released in the fiasco in which Nicola Calipari died.
The commies AND the Greens lost everything - they are out 100%. The left-wing in Italy has had culled from it its most toxic members. Dare I say they have drifted nearer to the center? When the left stops at Clinton-style third-way economic policies, they have climbed back over the precipice of respectability (the modern Democrats are currently slipping down the embankment). That, to me, is the big story here.
