If ever the stars were aligned against a Republican winning the White House, 2008 is it.
There's war. And not just any war, but a war that a majority of the public firmly and consistently believes is not worth fighting and that has dragged on longer than World War II and cost more than Vietnam.
There's a likely recession. And not just an ordinary recession, but a financial crisis that involves millions of home foreclosures among the middle class.
Then there's President Bush, a deeply unpopular Republican in his second term. Plus a fractured party that harbors profound suspicions about its nominee, Sen. John McCain. Money shortfalls. Disasters both natural, as in Hurricane Katrina, and man-made, as in corruption and sex scandals. Party enthusiasm as lukewarm as it is ferocious in the opposing camp. A flock of GOP retirements in Congress that reflect deep gloom about the party's prospects.
Add it all up, and the historical odds favor Democrats by a landslide.
But that's before one adds Democrats to the equation.
With such a litany of GOP woes, McCain "should be behind by 25 points," said Republican strategist Rich Galen. "Everybody gets to whistle past their own graveyard once in awhile, and maybe I am, but I will tell you that my friends who are senior Democrats, you have to take away their shoelaces and belts."

Their strengths? Let us enumerate them.
Barry: Smooth talker, if you don't mind lack of substance.
Mrs. Bill: Um. Vivid imagination.
Have I missed any?
Barry: Smooth talker, if you don't mind lack of substance.
Mrs. Bill: Um. Vivid imagination.
Have I missed any?
Sure -- let's add:
Barry: Smooth talker, if you don't mind lack of substance, Chicago political corruption and a strong tie to a racist, anti-semetic, anti-American preacher.
Mrs. Bill: Um. Vivid imagination and involved in the most corrupt administration in United States history.
I'm sure these sentences can easily be expanded even further.
I really think Hillary shouldn’t give up. She could still pull this thing out.
“And not just any war, but a war that a majority of the public firmly and consistently believes is not worth fighting”
Greed, Clinton mentioning Wright and David Duke was great fun. She needs to add another surprise and make sure they play Eric Clapper’s(Josselyn Elders name for Clapton)”Cocaine” at Democrat Rallies.

However, it is the degree of unacceptability's that separates who I will begrudgingly cast my vote in November.
I would consider a strong third party ticket of Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter.
I just wish someone would step forward and offer a legit alternative to the current crop of illicit candidates.
And not just any war, but a war that a majority of the public firmly and consistently believes is not worth fighting
You are correct ... and I would add:
A war that we are well on our way to winning already, and a war which most voters say we should not lose.
There is no WAR.
As the CBS news babe said about Hillary’s trip to Bosnia. The War is over (Note: Saddam’s regime has been replaced) but the hostilities continue.
It’s like saying that WWII ended in the 1990s because it took that long for the Cold War to end.
Al Gore is the only figure who could still step in and win. And he’s equally bad to Obama’s cult.
Instead of any more rigged debates, we should get the contestants onstage with Frank Costanza and his festivus pole for a proper airing of the grievances.
This is grade-school stuff. Even the viral sites aren’t talking about this anymore.
I think she will. The 85% liberal media thinks that Obama put Jeremiah Wright behind him, because they think the speech was brilliant and they agree with Wright on his basic premises. So they don't think there is an issue.
But if Clinton stays in there and around the convention time, enough polls show that the average white person is having a problem with Obama that they don't have with Clinton, then the superdelegates have to decide who to vote for. And that could easily be Clinton.
