Cohen confirmed Thursday that his office made a request to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons to look into changing Ford's incarceration from a minimum-security federal-prison camp at La Tuna, Texas, to a similar facility in central Louisiana.
Ford, 65, is to surrender to federal authorities next month to begin serving a 5 1/2-year sentence after his conviction last April for taking $55,000 in bribes as a state legislator.
Cohen said former congressman Harold Ford Sr. told his brother to seek Cohen's office's assistance as a constituent. Cohen said Bureau of Prisons guidelines suggest that a prisoner should be within 500 miles of his former home unless other factors are present.
"The only issue was did he need to be more than 500 miles away to protect him from people who might be from Tennessee who might be in his (prison) population," Cohen said. "They decided, after looking at the case, that he didn't need protection, which he doesn't. Nobody in prison wants to kill John. There might be a lot of people in Memphis that want to kill John, but nobody in prison."
Cohen said he was "beseeched" by Ford's girlfriend, Connie Mathews, to make the request, but that he has always supported having inmates close to their families.
Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Felecia Ponce said the federal prison camp at Pollock, La., is on 468 acres adjacent to a national forest.
While the facility in Texas would have been more than 1,100 miles from Memphis, Pollock is slightly more than 400 miles away.
No mention of party affiliation of anyone involved. I guess we’ll never know.
He's a died in the wool, demonRAT.
The corrupt Ford family has ruled Memphis for years. John Ford is brother to former congressman Harold Ford, Sr, and is uncle to wannabe Senator, Harold Ford, Jr.
FWIW, people in Memphis don’t need to be told which party the Fords belong to.
Once again the media avoids stating Ford’s
party affiliation. Code of Democrat.
We’re onto your devious ways MSM.
Memphis...another wonderful & beautiful city that went to hell in a hand basket after the ‘68 race riots...
I remember growing up there in the ‘50’s...you could practically EAT off the sidewalks...folks would actually use Tide detergent to clean the sidewalks & driveways...the sewers were loaded with suds on Saturdays. LOL
He could join Illinois’s ex-governor in terror hoot, Ind.
Now if the dude was white and not a RAT politician he’d be sent far far away from home.
“Nobody in prison wants to kill John. There might be a lot of people in Memphis that want to kill John, but nobody in prison.”
Now, that’s something to be proud of! A ringing endorsement, indeed!
I know that a ton of our fathers in Iraq would like Cohen to arrange for their children to be within 400 miles of them.
