His "ELOQUENT, BUT OUTRAGEOUS" speech was a once in a lifetime (no hypberbole there at all),,,but most certainly a 'once in a generation' chance--to help close the divide between races. He blew it,,,,he blew it BIG TIME!!!!

A black man like Obama is uniquely qualified to tell the black pastors to STOP SPREADING RACISM, HATE AND VENOM in church (where Pastors carry considerable sway)!! He could have said, "IT MUST STOP,,,IT MUST STOP NOW!

Instead, he 'kicked the can further down the road'---by trying to indirectly justify black racism--telling us that "we just don't understand".

How sad. Sigh.

By now completely disassociating himself from a racist like Wright--is legitmized what is said by some pastors in some black churches. How terribly sad.

This speech will play wonderfully in the black community, liberal MSM and democratic party,,in fact, it assures his nomination.

It will also play HORRIBLY with free-thinking people in the general election--and keep 'race baiting' on the front burner. How sad.

He had a wonderful chance to 'take the lead' in STOPPING the spread of racism, hate and venom (in a place where it is most effective---in church),,,,and he chose NOT to.

What an opportunity he had....and he BLEW IT!!! Not only does he not hear racist comments from his mentor and close friend--he must also not hear COMMON SENSE (like "You can pick your friends,,,you cannot pick your family--which was just unbelievably insulting to ANYONE with any common sense at all)

"ELOQUENT, BUT OUTRAGEOUS"!! What a chance he had to make a difference (sigh)--but I guess black racism is NOT 'CHANGE' that he promises.

I agree. His defense of Wright because Wright has also done 'good'--can be applied to ANY of your favorite racists/dictators/leaders>

Just 'fill in the name'--and I'm sure that you can:

First, put any hateful and venomous contexts in the 'perspective' of that racist/dictator,,,and

Second, find some 'good' done by the dictator/racist to justify 'looking the other way'!!

How sad.-

The one thing I listened for but didn't hear was, "I didn't leave when I rejected Wright's words, because...."

I'll grant that question as soon as every Catholic leaves their parish because priests are molesting altar boys.

I just think most of white America assumes it knows what it's like to be a black man, and most of us haven't a clue.

I was in a jewelry store once with my young son. We were the only customers and we had to be buzzed in. As we talked with the woman shop owner, a young black man pulled up in front of the store and got out of his Mercedes 450sl. He was dressed in wool slacks and a cashmere sweater, about 25 and very handsome. He buzzed to enter the store.

The shop owner looked panicked, and then said to him through the open grill of the door -- "I'm sorry. I can't let you in. I was held up last week and I'm just not going to do it."

As long as I live I will never forget the look on that young man's face. At first, he appeared stunned. Then hurt and humiliated. Then angry. He started to protest and said he just wanted to buy a gift for his wife.

The woman wouldn't budge.

The young man stood there and looked at me and my son, his eyes filled with pain and disbelief and fury. Finally, he turned, got in his care and drove away.

The woman quickly excused her actions. "I'm sorry, but I was afraid for all of us."

My son tugged on my sleeve.

"Do you know who that was?"

It was the newest member of the town's pro basketball team. He had just signed a multi-million dollar contract, and no doubt he had wanted to spend some of it.

Black men can escape the poverty, the projects, the slums, the fatherless homes, the grinding ignorance, the hopelessness. But they can't escape the color of their skin.

That same speech by Shylock works for black men.

Thoroughly buried - buried - in Obama’ speech is subtle acknowledgment that he was indeed present in the congregation when Wright made some of his hateful rants.

This would have been revealed very soon.

Also, Obama is attempting to prevent any more showings of the Wright rants through painting all who show them as right-wingers and racists. This is attempted censorship, which a large part of the media will readily accede to - and, correspondingly, attack others of the media, such as Fox, who continue to show it.

It could be a blowout of Reagan/Carter proportions.

Or Reagan/Mondale, Nixon/McGovern, or Bush/Dukakis...

The media loves to prop up entirely unelectable Democrats and make the public believe that the polls are accurate and that these libs really have a chance.

The one thing I listened for but didn’t hear was, “I didn’t leave when I rejected Wright’s words, because....”

Given my background, my politics, and my professed values and ideals, there will no doubt be those for whom my statements of condemnation are not enough. Why associate myself with Reverend Wright in the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church? And I confess that if all that I knew of Reverend Wright were the snippets of those sermons that have run in an endless loop on the television and You Tube, or if Trinity United Church of Christ conformed to the caricatures being peddled by some commentators, there is no doubt that I would react in much the same way

But the truth is, that isn’t all that I know of the man...

Like supporting the murder of a baby that survives an abortion and is delivered, Obama defends the indefensible.

The slavery of the old testament was a MUCH different issue than the one in our recent past.

Then why did Moses lead the slaves to freedom? "Let my people go"?

They had it good, did they?

Obama’s going to get a dead cat bounce in the polls because of the Paulian tin foil truthers who support the conspiracy theories of his pastor.

He also spoke out about parents upset about their kids being bused across town. Parents would be less concerned about the distance their children travelled to go to school IF the parents had the freedom (via vouchers or lower taxes) to CHOOSE where to send their kids.

It is a betrayal of the public trust to move INTO a good school district and pay the extra money for your house only to have your kids sent to another school in the interest of some kind of “fairness” to society.

[[I’ll grant that question as soon as every Catholic leaves their parish because priests are molesting altar boys.]]

99% of parishes do no such thing, the other 1% I’m sure many many folksd did leave.

[[I just think most of white America assumes it knows what it’s like to be a black man, and most of us haven’t a clue.]]

I think most of black America doesn’t know what it’;s like beign held hostage for the ills of hte past, and having it thrown in our face over and over again, used, exploited for politcal gain etc.

swell story- now change the color of the actors- have the hwite person in a majority black neighboirhood-

Racism happens on all sides of hte aisle, not just white on black- annectdotal stories liek htis do nothign to defend hate speech by reverends, regardless of color. Is the white on black racism dissproportionate to blakc on white? Sure, of course it is, but the ignronace of some should NOT condemn the majority of those of us who denounce racism, nor should the ignorance of some be constantly held against the majority of Americans regardless of hteir color such as Obama would have us do despite his thinly veiled rhettoric falsely denouncing such issues.

This is the speech that will be remembered as the turning point in the campaign... for John McCain.

This is the best McCain campaign speech ol' John never had to make.

Obama just boiled the whole race down to black whining that America hasn't suffered enough because they weren't born white.

Apparently Obama feels that his life would be going even better than it is if he'd been born the son of two white parents.

Rush did a pretty good job taking it apart.

My question is, how do you know someone for 20 years yet say you don’t know what the pastor stands for, is about?

Have to wonder how he’ll fill the several thou. white house positions, much less his cabinet.

The March 16, 2008 bulletin from Trinity United Church of Christ, page 15 is an ad for a brand new (presumably since all the pictures are of black children) black school called Kwame Nkrumah Academy. It says that this school “is a global teaching and learning center grounded by principles of African-centered educational excellence. Our mission is to prepare future world leaders by equipping them with

A Strong Sense of Personal Identity
Sound Understanding of Global Ethics
A Superb Integration of academic and Leadership skills”

It has a September 2008 opening date with Kdgt.-1st Grade to begin with.

www.kwamenkrumahacademy.org

For the life of my I read something yesterday written by Wright but I cannot remember where I saw it, but it was about the failure of many blacks to understand that integration was really about giving up black identity and culture and how he was against this. He supported and was looking forward to the building of this school so that it could properly train the black mind. He and thus his church’s leadership and thus the general congregation are in support of “segregated schools” as long as they can teach the “Wright” kind of blackness. Is this the kind of school that Obama would send his daughters to?

I found this article about Kwame Nkrumah who liberated Ghana from Britain to be kind of interesting in light of a lot of other stuff we’ve been learning about Wright’s black liberation theology and Obama’s connections to Marxism in his teen years in Hawaii and his use of Alinsky ideas as a community organizer and teacher before his political career. I admit I haven’t got the time to investigate this fully but maybe someone knows more or will look into it more.
