Obama lectures us on race, gender and equality. Obama's speech text

"A More Perfect Union" Remarks of Senator Barack Obama Tuesday, March 18th, 2008 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

10:17:53 ET

“We the people, in order to form a more perfect union.”

Two hundred and twenty one years ago, in a hall that still stands across the street, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launched America’s improbable experiment in democracy. Farmers and scholars; statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyranny and persecution finally made real their declaration of independence at a Philadelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787.

The document they produced was eventually signed but ultimately unfinished. It was stained by this nation’s original sin of slavery, a question that divided the colonies and brought the convention to a stalemate until the founders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least twenty more years, and to leave any final resolution to future generations.

Of course, the answer to the slavery question was already embedded within our Constitution – a Constitution that had at is very core the ideal of equal citizenship under the law; a Constitution that promised its people liberty, and justice, and a union that could be and should be perfected over time.

And yet words on a parchment would not be enough to deliver slaves from bondage, or provide men and women of every color and creed their full rights and obligations as citizens of the United States.

Did you actually hear the speech? From reading it, it’s full of fluff. I never underestimate the stupidity of the electorate esp the democratic electorate. Racial quotas, welfare, busing etc. have been liberal ideas that have one objective, ie to keep the black race dependent on the democratic electorate.

Obama is a throw back to Louis Armstrong. He is not an independent thinker like Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas, Condi Rice etc.

The more naive you are the more you will be enthralled by him. Keith Olberman last night was falling all over the place during the interview of Obama. Only soft ball questions.

Come on LS.

The story here is not that the Great Society failed. We all know that already, which why some of us are here...

And those you want us to lecture don't care that it's failed. They still want to get paid regardless and continue to get a pass for cultural implosion.

I'm not letting this go. No way. The old media might but this will stick to Obama like the tar baby for this whole race....and he is the one who plays race and then goes “Who Me?”

This is the first time in my 30 years of adult life that I have seen black racism which is endemic actually take some heat and have to whither under the light of day. Note how Obama can't take that heat, he still wants to opine about America's failures rather than truly confront his and Wright's own demons.

Excuse me....we have some momentum now and I hope some have the balls to drive this home. The sad fact is most Americans are clueless. This sort of talk is not uncommon in black urban churches from fiery preachers. It's the new Reverend Ike...

Imagine a white politician attending a white church that spoke this vitriol of blacks ....he would have withdrawn from the campaign.

I and many other are tired of it. Some of us live it. This crap spews right into rap music lyrics, black thug culture and beyond. The next time some black thug walks up and carjacks some soccer mom in Target parking lot and kills her for sport, do you really think that rhetoric like that from Wright has not made it's way through the black community and influenced his heartlessness towards whites?

You bet it has. I've lived it with my own eyes and ears.

Reverend Wright and his enablers deserve the same fate as Tom Metzger or Pete Peters (look em up kids). They are doing the same thing to my race they accuse us of doing to them.

That Obama can even run for POTUS with this baggage is so pitiful.

Folks here have been saying ....”don't touch this” since we all knew about it months ago. Why? Do blacks get a pass on racism? McCain can continue to sit back and let it happen but talk radio, blogs and some media can keep it going. This will probably return to smolder but it's efficacy will remain. I say good and Godspeed.

“His candidacy is over”

I have to respectfully disagree with you. Honestly, where I live in middle, small town USA, there is no outrage over this story (if people even have heart of this) This seems like a big deal to people who watch the news and the candidates. Most people don't though. Most people don't care. A lot of people want change and will continue to go over to the Democrats side- especially if the economy keeps going in what feels like a downward spiral.
This won't stop them. A speedbump in the road maybe, but not a road block.

The 'original sin' of slavery was not present in England or here when this country was first colonized. There was indentured servitude, where someone would pay off his passage by working for someone for up to 7 years.

Then a black man here decided one of his indentured servants should remain so for the rest of his life, and got a judge to agree! Out of that came slavery in the US.

A lot of black Americans are going to be very angry if Obama isn’t the new President next January. It might be better if their anger is directed at the Clintons for stealing the nomination from Obama than at the rest of the country for failing to vote for Obama.

Obama will be selected, and then McCain will trounce him and blacks will be told that the evil GOP were racists to deny Obama the presidency and that Fox News lead the lynching of poor Rev. Wright.

Beats the alternative. Maybe we should just coronate Lord Obama so they can' bitch?

While we are at it:

Is this an authentic piciture? If so, we need to send it to Rush, FoxNews Channel and other media outlets!

So, let me get this straight. Because Wright grew up in the 50's when there was a greater racial divide it justifies his racist rhetoric, and anti-American speech?

This is what obama is implying!

yes it’s authentic.

Obama’s defgense is that at other times he did place his hand over his heart.

Rush etc have had that for months

I believe you are right about where the discussion should now go. However, I believe the ground lost by Obama cannot be re-gained. The 5% of voters that he lost will not change their minds about this now. They now see him as another Jesse Jackson sort and he won’t get past that. Those vidoes of “Reverend” Wright were devastating for that 5%. They now see Obama completely different than they did before and won’t believe a word he says from here on out or even consider voting for him.

Conservataives should no move this discussion forward now (as you discussed) or allow the opportunity paint this as a racial attack.

Another thing to consider though is that a good portion of the media is still rooting for Hillary Cinton. That is good. They won’t give Obama a free pass on this.
