Grim Anniversary: Waco Siege [28 February 1993]

"Waco Siege, a fifty-one-day siege by federal
agents of the Branch Davidian religious group's commune
headquarters outside Waco, Texas, in early 1993. The
siege, which began after a botched and bloody attempt on
28 February 1993 to arrest the group's leader, David
Koresh, on a weapons charge, ended in the deaths of four
federal agents and seventy-eight Branch Davidians. The
stalemate ended when U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno
ordered the use of force on April 19. Soon after federal
agents moved, fire engulfed the compound, killing
seventy-two, provoking controversy over the use of force
in dealing with dissident sects. Although some surviving
members of the sect were acquitted of manslaughter, they
received harsh sentences when convicted on lesser
charges. In August 1999, new documents surfaced
indicating that the FBI had fired three flammable tear
gas canisters during the raid on the compound. Following
a ten-month investigation, Senator John C. Danforth
released a report concluding that although federal
agents had mishandled evidence, they had neither started
the fire nor improperly employed force."

I’d forgotten that this is one of H!’s “accomplishments”.

It wasn’t a grim siege. It was a quagmire so they went for total annihilation.

Why stage a gas attack on a windy day? Hmmm?

I know I’m getting older but 1993 doesn’t seem like that long ago.

Because the fire spreads better.

Especially when you vent the structure by knocking holes in key places.

Years ago, at the recommendation of an ex-BATF agent I knew in California, I purchased and read the ATF's report on this fiasco.

Shall we say, it made for very interesting reading.

Bubba’s crowning achievement against “terrorism”.

The most ironic feature of this whole thing was the horrific revelation that the leader, David Koresh, was having sex with the younger female members of the klan. IMAGINE THAT!

I never realized that the first WTC bombing and the Waco siege were just two days apart.

And the BATFE is still going strong harassing people with little to no over sight.

Looks like changing the occupant of the White House really didn't do us a lot of good. Looking at our options for November, it doesn't look good looking forward either...

Minigunning the roof kind of helped the ventilation too.
More things happened at Waco and more parties were involved than we’ll probably ever know. May all the innocents who perished there rest in peace.

Attorney General Janet Reno ordered the use of force

And refresh our memory, who provided it? In violation of what cherished principle in American law?

Grim statistic: Clinton pick Janet Reno was the worst and most corrupt AG in American history.

I remember standing in the Second floor lounge of the barracks in Iwakuni Japan watching these buildings burn thinking, "Is this what I joined the Marine Corps to protect? WTF is going on here? This isn't right and there is not a damn thing I can do about it."

Still makes me sick that the criminals with badges who perpetrated this are still roaming around free.

I happened to be on I-35 that day, passing through Waco when the fire was started. I had the radio on, listening to a play by play---I pulled off to the side of the road and just sat there watching the smoke rise in the distance.

Many other cars were pulling off the road and stopping, too. It was probably the saddest moment of my life--knowing what our government was doing to these American citizens.
