Another locked-from-sight thesis for another Democrat First Lady-to-be?

An alumnus (pl. alumni) according to the American Heritage Dictionary is "a male graduate or former student of a school, college, or university." [1] In addition, an alumna (pl. alumnae) is "a female graduate or former student of a school, college, or university."

Can anyone alleviate my curiosity if this is indeed correct? In Chapter 1 of Michelle's thesis she states clearly that she is about to become a black Alumnus. So is she using the masculine singular of Alumni? In fact she should have used Alumnae... Paragraph 2 first sentence chapter 1. Yes I have too much spare time , shut up.
