The Long Run

For McCain, Self-Confidence on Ethics Poses Its Own Risk

By JIM RUTENBERG, MARILYN W. THOMPSON, DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK and STEPHEN LABATON

WASHINGTON — Early in Senator John McCain’s first run for the White House eight years ago, waves of anxiety swept through his small circle of advisers.

A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, visiting his offices and accompanying him on a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.

When news organizations reported that Mr. McCain had written letters to government regulators on behalf of the lobbyist’s client, the former campaign associates said, some aides feared for a time that attention would fall on her involvement.

Mr. McCain, 71, and the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, 40, both say they never had a romantic relationship. But to his advisers, even the appearance of a close bond with a lobbyist whose clients often had business before the Senate committee Mr. McCain led threatened the story of redemption and rectitude that defined his political identity.

This was the plan all along. Build him up, get the nomination, then destroy him for either Obama or Hillary. They were NEVER going to support a Republican.

There is a lengthy thread on the NY Times story:

This is just the start of it. McCain’s romance with the MSM is about to end. No one should be surprised. Since before 2000 the media realized that in McCain they had someone they could use to hurt Bush and Republicans. The payoff for McCain was all the attention and free publicity that finally got him to where he is now. Even McCain had to know that he was going to get stabbed in the back as surely as he has been stabbing Republicans in the back. That’s politics. McCain’s crew has had more than eight years to figure out how to deal with this. Let’s see how good they are.

Once a whore always a whore.

As the most liberal republican candidate Johnny Mc was happy to be in bed with the liberal media when they used each other to knock out conservatives in the primaries.

Now he is being used to help knock out the challenger to the most liberal democrat. He should just lay back and enjoy it.

Maybe he thought they really liked him this time.
This should clear up that little misunderstanding.

If they are throwing this old dirt this early in the game it means they have stronger stuff they are holding on to for release at the most opportune time.

He can twist in the wind for all I care.

Bet the FBI is already all over this because of the funding.

Certain to come out about influence peddling.

Whoa, I bet those “repeated confrontations” by staffers, sent him into apoplectic fits of Titanic proportions. We’ll probably hear about those “confrontations” next, when he throws one of said “staffers” through a 9th floor window!

Remember a few months ago...supposedly the LATimes was sitting on a “scandal” about some prominent candidate? I don’t believe this is it, but wonder what it was/is.

McCain used the NYTs to get the liberal vote for the nomination. Now he’s using the lefty rag to get conservative votes for the general election.
The guy may be a bum but he’s a clever bum.

This just sealed the deal with me regarding McCain. I am so outraged at the innuendo. They just threw out a bucket of mud and hoped it stuck.

The New York Times may have done what McCain has not been able to do, unite Conservatives behind him.

It didn't take a crystal ball to see this coming:

"What dirty tricks will the Dems use below the radar? It is, after all, the party of the Clintons. Surrogatges will employed to go after McCain on his personal life..."

-snip-

"Watch as the Dems' best buddies, their liberal media, will set a torch to the same straw house that they used to build St. John The Maverick up. And down he will go."
