James Michael McHaney, a former aide to Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography, U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Taylor announced Thursday.
McHaney faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 at sentencing. No sentencing date has been set as of yet.
While employed as a scheduler in Cantwell’s office, McHaney was arrested in late 2007 for attempting to sexually exploit a teenage boy. He was fired within hours of his arrest.
Law enforcement agents suspected McHaney might be sexually interested in male minors after a cooperating witness informed them that he had exchanged images of child pornography with McHaney. Under supervision of law enforcement agents, the witness, in an online chat with McHaney, set up a meeting with a 13-year-old boy for sex at his residence. When McHaney arrived at the witness’s residence, he was arrested by agents.
A search after the arrest found a flash drive that contained more than 600 images of child pornography. Many of the images were of prepubescent males, ranging in age from 3 years old to their early teens. The drive also had movie files depicting prepubescent males engaging in sexual acts.
Cantwell’s office declined to comment on McHaney’s guilty plea.
Apparently, pedophiles and perverts are only newsworthy when they're Republicans.

Just because the picture existed does not mean that you needed to perpetuate the negative image that it conveys.
