China tries to avert emergency and anger amid snows

SHANGHAI: As unusually heavy snowfall and cold weather continued over much of the country, the Chinese government stepped up emergency efforts Wednesday to handle a crisis that threatens to become as much a public relations disaster as it has been a logistical one.

Continuing his tour of areas that have been heavily afflicted by the severe winter weather, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao flew to the southern city of Guangzhou, where more than 600,000 travelers had been stranded by the suspension of normal rail service after large numbers of trains that operate on heavily traveled north-south routes were paralyzed by power outages earlier in the week.

Lack of ability to deliver coal to power plants has been quite a problem for them.

The Chinese government is getting perilously close to falling off the precipice. Even a winter storm could blow them away.

This can’t be. Everyone knows it’s only the evil capitalists who don’t care about people and never have an emergency plan in place. Communism takes care of everyone, because that government cares about people.

Wouldn’t it be something if an unusually severe winter storm brought down the Communist Chinese government?

I could be wrong, but I think the Summer Olympics are going to be a disaster.

China is experiencing “unusually cold weather, which included the heaviest snows in 50 years in some parts of central China, and even snow in the south, where temperatures generally remain temperate for the winter”

And all across the US, states experienced lower than normal winter temps last week and heavier than usual snowfall this week. Yep, global warming is felt all around the world (sarc).

Oh...hadn't you heard? Come on...get with the times!

It's not Global Warming anymmore. Now, the enviro-whacko buzz word is "Global Climate Change", so they can effectively blame any climate disaster on the human race in general, and the US specifically.

Trouble is, like the Demos, McCain is right there in league with them.

But I thought that China was the role model for responding to disaster and evacuating affected citizens in the event of a weather-related calamity.

At least that's what the liberals swore to me after Bush killed all those people using Hurricane Katrina as a weapon.

I’m thinking more and more that that damn dam is screwing up the weather patterns in that part of the world. Lots more moisture in the air causing new air currents and precip.

I think it's more a global thing, than the dam... The 3 Gorges dam is in the mid-east section of China (Hubei province):

Highlighted in red. Beijing is 1400 km due north, and Guangzhou - where the 600,000 are stranded - is 1600 km south.

The dam MAY have an impact on Shanghai, being 1000 km West of Shanghai. But the snow problem is predominantly in the north and south of China, well outside the impact of the dam.

My guess is that normal decadal oscillations are causing the cold winds to blow once again in from the Himalayas (1500 km to the West of Guangzhou) and from Siberia (2000 km West of Beijing).
