A reporter from Agence France-Presse, the world's oldest established news agency, visited Northeast Ohio recently to report on the devastation wrought by the subprime lending crisis.
The story was rich in detail: "The streets are empty. Trash rustles down the road past rusted barbecues, abandoned furniture, sagging homes and gardens turned to weed.
This is Shaker Heights."
Uh, no, it isn't. He was talking about Cleveland.
"It's like describing a murder scene and getting everything right except the name of the murder victim," said Cuyahoga County Treasurer James Rokakis, who was quoted inaccurately in the story as saying, "Shaker Heights was the perfect storm."
"I never even mentioned Shaker Heights," he said.
Luc Olinga, the French reporter based in New York who wrote the story for AFP, somehow got his geography mixed up.
TOPICS: Business/Economy; Culture/Society; News/Current Events; US: Ohio
KEYWORDS: cleveland; foreclosure; ghost; shaker
Turns out the stupid french reporter got his geography a bit mixed up.

Like most of Ohio hasn’t been like this for ten years anyway.

Like most of Ohio hasnt been like this for ten years anyway. Not really. The major cities have bombed out areas just the same as in many states, but many areas are doing well.

As long as we're trying to be accurate.

Thanks for this. I remembered reading this story and thinking there was something strange and incredible about it. It was, as it turns out, just that: Incredible. A sound, honest, Conservative word we ought to reclaim.
Incredible

That article caught my eye as well. As a former Cleve. Hts. resident, Shaker Hts. neighbor to the North, I knew there was no “Chagrin St.” Chargin Blvd, yes; Chagrin St. no. As my freshman English instructor would say, that is a mistake that “casts doubt upon the author’s literacy”, or veracity in this case.
Glad to hear it has been revealed journalistic incompetence.

Sounds like the reporter has been listening to “My City Was Gone” by The Pretenders.

Didn’t you know that all you need to do on FR is read the first line?
