Uh...in those days, the South voted Democrat no matter what. Case in point, they voted solidly for the Democrat Win Hancock in 1880...in spite of the fact that his corps held the line before Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg. That’s why Southern Democrats were called “Yellow Dog Democrats.” They would vote for a yellow dog if it were on the D ticket...they were NEVER gonna vote for the party of Lincoln no matter what...
