McLean, VA - Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:

"Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people."

Very sad day for all of us. I’m deeply disappointed ~ never given $$ before Fred. I so wanted a conservative to vote for.

What can I say, Hunter and now Fred, Romney is the only one left (If only a quasi conservative)

Tough road ahead, I might be staying home during the general election.

Fred will still get my vote during the primary regardless, McInsane will get win here in Connecticut but not with my vote.

Voting for a socialist, even if a lighter one than Hilary, gives them both parties. I'm not voting for a socialist. Anyone is a lighter socialist/communist than Hillary. You have your priorities, and they are not mine. Obviously. I am playing the long game, not just one election. Since you plan on voting Dem, your game is far different than mine. I don't think the Gipper would approve of yours.

If you vote for a candidate that is not running, it’s as good as a vote for McCain/Huckabee/Rudy. I can understand sitting out the General, but at least vote against McCain by voting for Romney.

My first choice was Thompson. Second choice Hunter. I’m really disappointed that Thompson dropped out. I thought he was climbing and would do much better in states that do not have crossover or independents voting.

McCain has been dubbed the candidate of the New York Times. I think that is valid. Huckabee is not an economic conservative. I think these two can be ruled out because of their PRESENT stands. The applies to Giuliani. Romney’s current stand on political, economic, and social issues is conservative. His positions are very good and he can defend them well. I will vote for Romney in the primaries.

As an interested observer from very far away (Japan), this may well have been the last Presidential election campaign cycle with the last chance to solve the massive illegal alien invasion problem in a rational and peaceful manner.

One can indeed see it coming.

All I can say to "my friends" in the USA, particularly if McCain is elected -- same with Hilary--is, be prepared. This is really a shame our country is being taken away like this. We have many historical precedents for what American is about to go through.

You don't live in Connecticut or follow the polls, Romney has as much chance as an ice cube in hell.

Fred will get my vote in the primary, General election? time will tell.

Let them laugh. They’re next, because the Huckster is out of money, and I don’t know ANY Fredheads that have Huck as their next choice...most seem to be reluctantly defaulting to Romney.

You assume that a RINO will make wise Supreme Court appointments. I know that it takes a conservative to know a conservative. A RINO doesn't have the ability to recognize, let alone appoint, a truly conservative judge. He may think he does and promise to do so, but that's like asking a colorblind guy to promise that he'll always choose green over red. He means well ... but he can't tell the difference and is at the mercy of other cues or other people to tell him which is which.

Many a shipwreck has been caused by a colorblind captian unable to distinguish the port lights from the starboard of an oncoming craft.
